    Hello,
I am using XP Home with IE6 SP1 with all the latest Windows updates installed. When I boot my computer I get the following:
    Error signature
    szAppName: szAppVer: 0.0.0.0 szModName: kernel32.dll
    szModVer:5.1.2600.1106 offset:00013887

    Error Report Contents
    c:\Docume~1\JAMESJ~1Locals~1Temp|Wer16:tmp.dir00\mcshield.exe.mdmp
    C:\Docume~1\JAMESJ~1|Locals~1|Temp|Wer16.temp.dir00\appcompat.txt

I hope someone can help me. I have no idea what it all means.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jim

Well, Mcshield.exe is a system protection thing - part of the McAfee tools. And that file is probably a dump of specifics of what it found and didn't like. At a guess, appcompat.txt is a readable version of the specific application compatability issues that caused the error.

So it appears that either McShield thinks your scanner is trying to do something illegal that would make the system unstable and is protecting you from a crash or McShield has gone nuts and is blocking a safe application from running.

You could try turning off the McShield feature and seeing if the scanner works fine or if the system crashes. Also make sure you have the latest version of the scanner drivers and of McAfee.

Also, if you haven't already, make sure the device itself is on the list of approved hardware for XP.
