I struggled to add an NT4 server box to my Win2003 PDC.

Eventually worked out that I set the AD to Windows 2000 Native when I set up the PDC and apparently I need to use mixed mode to do this.

Anyone got any ideas short of reinstalling my PDC?

AD does not use PDC/BDC. You simply have Domain Controller(s) and if you have a large domain, you can also have Global Catalog Servers which is a new thing since NT4 domains.

NT4 servers do not know how to play in AD as domain controllers.

Other than that, I'm confused as to exactly what you want to do but if you explain more, we can probably help.
