    I use Windows XP Home Ed. OEM (Dell Dimension 8200 desktop), and while changing the icon of a frequently used Favorite to make it easy to spot, I noticed a setup.exe file in the system32 folder (C:\WINDOWS\system32\setup.exe). I clicked the Version tab in the file's Properties, and learned it was the "Windows NT Setup Executable ", v. 5.1.2600.0. Until now, my understanding of the Windows XP Operating System is that it's a combination of Windows 2000, 98, and NT, but I don't know if that's even close to accurate. Nevertheless, it was surprising to see what appears to be an executable intended to setup an independent NT operating system. Can anyone clarify my impression of the Windows XP OS, and perhaps explain the presence of this NT Setup Executable? Thank you.

    P.S. I'm fairly certain you know how impossible it is for an OEM user of Microsoft software to get answers from Microsoft; and unfortunately, when it comes to the XP operating system, Dell Tech Support is not up to its usual level of relatively acceptable reliability ( "relatively" being the key word). Thanks again.

    NT

    ver = common name
    NT4 = NT4
    NT5 = Win2K
    NT5.1 = XP

    And the available XP build right now is 2600.

    So, the file version v. 5.1.2600.0 you are seeing is the correct one for your system.

    Thanks Newt, but . . . ?

    Hello Newt,

    Thanks for taking time to clear up the version issue, but are you saying Windows NT 5.1 and Windows XP are one and the same - that the names are interchangeable?

    After I posted the NT setup.exe question, I checked out several other threads, including the one on converting XP File and Folder Search to be more like Win2k. Although I've improved the XP Search method somewhat by adding Advanced options, I still miss and prefer the way my Windows 98 system does File and Folder searches. On one or two occasions in the past, I have gone into the Registry with very specific step by step instructions, but I don't have any experience with running Command lines, etc. Is there some way that I could safely convert my XP Files and Folders Search to be like Windows 98 (I've never used Win2k, so don't know if it's the same as 98)? If there is, please give VERY detailed instructions - lol. Thanks again.

    P.S. Should I have started a new thread for the Search question?

    AFAIK they should be interchangable. But more folks will understand XP than will understand NT5.1 (and besides, XP is quicker to say :D).

    And yes, you should start a new thread for a new question. Two reasons:

    1. More folks will look at a thread if they have the same question or if they think they have an answer.

    2. The archives here are a valuable resource where you can find lots of the more usual questions and the answers given. However, when you search on the titles, if a problem is mis-named (or has a new topic inside), it won't be seen by the search engine in most cases.

    Because of item #2, I am not going to put any specifics on your new question in here.

    Also re: #1, if you look at the number of views this thread has gotten, pretty much only you and I have looked at it as of this moment. Other threads the same age have more views - indicating more interest.

    Greetings Newt,

    I followed your advice and started a new thread for the XP Search issue. Barbara-Ann let me know about TweakUI for XP and I'm getting ready to install it - and switch to the 98/2k style Files and Folders search. Thanks again and have a good weekend.
