My NT4SP6 box suddenly is doing this: when I shutdown, the message box to wait while files get written to disk (paraphrasing, since I don't remember for sure) flashes by in an instant and the computer immediately begins its reboot into NT4 again. That is, there is no longer a stoppage at the end letting you know it is safe to shut the computer off. (I may not have the messages quoted correctly, I no longer can see them as they flash by so fast).

I have made absolutely sure I am selecting shutdown, not restart. Is there a setting in NT that controls this behavior?

Try downloading and installing the exe file from Here. The problem described isn't the same as yours but the fix often cures your issue as well.

    If not, it's harmless.

Post back if it doesn't help you.

Howdy, that fix did *not* work. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks

I'm a little concerned by the fact this behavior suddenly started on a machine that had been doing properly.

Try reapplying SP6a (or applying 6a if you currently have 6).

If that doesn't work or if you want some really nice shutdown options, download and use This free utility and see if it works for you.

If neither of those helps, gotta start thinking it may be a BIOS issue although I'm not hardware-savvy enough to say just what.

In any case, please post back with your results.
