I ran across something that I do not understand.

And also something that others may not be aware of and possibley re-open any holes in IE & OE.

Everytime I would install NS7 and then go to the Windows Update I had to re-install the Critical Updates. Or at least it said I needed to. ( and I did )

I do not know from 100% sure but I believe this occured due to installing JAVA 2 from NS.

Was this something that I caused or is it some thing that should be watched for when installing NS7 ?

Or am I being a little leary of stuff from AOL.

I have for the time being un-installed NS7.

#1 for the posted reason and #2 getting ready for the new NS7.1.

    Hi BB,

I can't answer about Netscape7/Java2/WindowsUpdate conflicts seeing Win95 support on the winupdate site has basically ended but my guess would be that the IE critical updates ere NOT removed by AOL  :D

Possibly the Java2 install reset IE Advanced settings to use Sun's Java insead of the Microsoft Virtual Machine. You can DEselect Sun's Java and REcheck the option under Microsoft VM: JIT Compiler for virtual Machine enabled .

(Another way: Control Panel, Java Plugin Browser tab UNcheck Microsoft Internet Explorer)

While you are in IE Internet Options make sure you check for an AOL entry in Security Trusted Sites and remove it.

    Alice.

Thank you for giving me at least a starting point.

It is always good to know that help is available for those of us that are trying something new.

However, I did like NS7 as it WAS ( not seemed to be but WAS ) faster and SMOOTHER then IE6.

    Edit & add

I did mess up the mail part but that was MY DOING not NS. I use Eudora and I apparently did not get things set up right.

And I am not one that expects to install some thing new ( and possible conflicting ) and not run into a few problems.

Control Panel and Trusted Sites have been adjusted according to suggestions.

There were two AOL items in the Trusted Sites. ( now gone )

Now that the subject has come up, I do recall seing something when installing the JAVA about setting it for both IE & NS.

Will need watch more carefully next time :)

    Hi BillyBob,

Maybe someone with Win98 can shed some more light on the WindowsUpdate issue.

No need to be sorry because you were of some help.

You pointed me to some areas that will need to rechecking later.

Some of these things can be cross platform items.

    Hey BB

I am using Sun Java and my windows update has been incorrect since I changed. I have IE6sp1, q328970 and q324929 cumulative patches installed but windows update insists that I need more updates. I simply ignore WUPD and download the cumulative stuff to my IE Update folder for install later.

I have Mozilla installed so I can play with it when I'm bored. I think it is faster than IE. I think it needs the functionality of IE when managing bookmarks, and the use of the user.js and profiles is confusing but excellent help is availabe on the BBS from Ramona, Antony, and Tranquillo among others.

    Thank you.

That is the kind of info I need. Which can only come from who has used NS much more than I have.

It makes me feel a little better knowing that it was not just something I did or something on my machine.

And that I may not be reopening holes in IE/OE. Of course I do not worry about OE as it is not even on ANY of my machines.

And that all patches etc. may still exist but MS just don't see them cause something else is present that MS don't like anyway.

:( MS does not like compitition :( Why do you think I am staying with the very user configurable do pretty much as I please Win98 SE ?

I do agree with NS being faster and the Bookmark idea.

BTW. I noticed that when I did re-install the updates there would be some changes in NS the first time I ran it after doing that. It seemed to have to rebuild itself.

    Installed NS 7.01

Applied the suggestions by Alice in her first reply, and all seems well.

Checked Windows Updates and it said none available. ( or what ever it says )

    Thank you for the help.

    Hi BillyBob,

Interesting thread here. I don't use Windows Update, and also don't have OE on my System, so can't be of any help there. I did note that you and Bmoore1129 both have IE 6, SP1 installed, and I can't help but wonder if that too would be an issue in the Windows Update problem? There were also some other Netscape incompatibility problems associated with IE6, SP1.

BB, you are definitely the Windows guru here, so just thought I would throw that out for thought! ;)

    Ramona :D

Well, when I made my reply at 7:25 I had only had NS7.01 installed for about one Windows restart and 15 minutes.

So far I see no problems.

But tomorrow could be another day :D

My thought on this is that the install program is not reading the registry correctly [ignoring?] and overwriting some system files with it's version.
A program called Installwatch Pro[free] can help here. It will monitor added, deleted, and modified registry entries and files in general, whatever may occur during an install. Just take a before snapshot, and it will compare with the after snapshot.
