Installed NS 8.0.1 OK except the weather channel install to the desktop failed. Still doesn't want to play. Oh well, don't need it anyway.

Big disapointment: Can't get NS to except TB for email purposes.

BTW anyone know what the TB "Address URL" is? I typed in "Thunderbird ", but result is, while accepting the entry, NS still cannot bring up TB.

At moment, I prefer the ease and speed that FF offers. NS 8 still a little sluggish.

I think that you are a bit confused by NS8, and Netscape is compounding to the confusion. I have seen many posts at a number of newsgroup, and Mail is the biggie. Just think that NS8 is like Firefox, and Thunderbird is the mail client, like Netscape or Mozilla mail, or Outlook Express.
With NS8 you need to have made your mail client default, and you need a link to it. Up to N* beta, you had two options, with identical results: a. Tools|Check Mail, or drag and drop the System Mail button from View|Customize|Personal into the toolbar of your choice. My problem, and other people's was that the button had gone AWOL, but after much searching I found out that it can resurrected by clicking on the button on the bottom left of Customize, "reset all default" . When you have such button you have Mail.
You were looking in the wrong place, i.e. the one for Webmails, like Netscape, Hotmail, Yahoo and others. Thunderbird is not a webmail, so no URL to enter.
As for speed, I had noticed a noticeable drag with NS8. But don't think of a replacement for an existing program, just something new to look at. But, in my opinion, none of the change made from NS8 beta have helped. They took a step back, but NS8 is not so bad. I will try to see if my problems can be reduced by uninstalling, and using some other program to Import the settings from. And, do away with NS8 beta which I have liked better.

    Bob,

To add to what Westside suggests, if I right click on any page and select "Send to ", my Thunderbird opens with no problems. I do use it as my default Mail Client. So no worries there...

Have you tried the "Customize" button for the Weather Channel? Right click on the Personal Toolbar, then the Personal Tab. Drag the "Weather" Icon to the Personal Toolbar. Is this the same thing as the Weather Channel? If not just repeat the process, only this time drag the "Weather" icon back to the Customize screen.

Managed to get the "TB" button to show in the Pers. toolbar -- per Westside. Unfortunately, clicking on it starts a new browser tab which runs and runs and runs in circles -- accomplishing nothing but a time out error.

Called up TB separately and clicked on the System Mail icon (envelope). That did work: it showed the TB window -- but only if I manually call up TB first.

The Desktop Weather thingy was also a problem. I could not stop it from attempting to install. I finally clicked cancel during installation. But that didn't get rid of it. Couldn't find it in Add/Remove Progs. so had to resort to "MyUnistall ". That worked. Followed up with cleaning out the registry of NS 8 "stuff" and all seems well.

I'm just as happy living with the stable, fast, easy and comfortable FF! I'll wait. Maybe I'll take another look with NS 8.5 or 9 -- depending on my mood.

Thanks for your help and responses -- all. I'll keep lurkin' around here as before and jumpin' in occasionally.

    Happy surfin,
    Bob

    Bob,
you are talking about stuff which is totally unfamilar to me, and, I am sure, to Ramona. first of all, which TB button? I don't understand your two paragraphs about Mail. System Mail should recall your default mail client, which is Thunderbird for me and Ramona. Read Mail will give the full list of accounts, if more than one. This is no different of the Mail button in Firefox.

I don't know where you got the Desktop Weather, which appears to be a standalone program. NS8 has a Weather button which can be dragged and dropped on your toolbar of your choice. I have the same button in both Local and the Personal toolbar. The Desktop Weather had been made available with an early NS. I tried it, and uninstalled it because it would open the news headlines only only with IE. I have a similar, and not showy Desktop program, available from one of our TV stations, is as good as they come, except that it cannot be customized for places outside Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa.

    Westside,

Wow, I must have had a diff vers of NS 8.0.1 than you. The "TB button" is the webmail button, except it displays the name "Thunderbird" rather than "Webmail ".

It still would not work. Only opened a new tab, eventually timing out. Once opening TB manually, I could deal with my mail. Very clumsy. No way would NS call up Thunderbird -- FF has no problem with this maneuver at all.

Desktop weather popped up, following the NS browser display during installation and would NOT go away. Tried cancel button; no good. Went to the upper right "X" nothing. Tried alt-4 -- that got rid of the window, but not without a couple pesty alerts that I had not completed installing Desktop Weather, further advising that I could do it later after setting up NS -- or something to that affect. So it was associated in some way with NS (??)!

BTW way on one effort tried to go ahead with the Weather install but it just ran in circles until it timed out. Piece a junk, IMHO.

Finally gave up. Don't really need it. So dumped it. BTW, Desktop Weather was NOT in the Add/Remove listing. Had to use "MyUninstaller" to clean the junk off my 'puter. Also found remnants in registry and immediately removed those. All appears to be back to normal now.

Hope I explained this a lil more clearly. Please forgive if not -- I am technically challenged to say the least.

    Bob,

What you were doing is adding Thunderbird to the Webmail list. No can do, as that component is only for Webmail, not POP. The only way to open Thunderbird is the tiny System Envelope which either allows you to Read Mail or Write/Send Mail. No wonder you were frustrated!

You can right click and select "Customize" and drag items like the Weather, News, etc. off the Toolbars. It's just like Firefox in that respect. Sorry you had a bad experience!

    Ramona,

OK, think I have down now. See I told y'all I was technically challenged! Maybe I'll try it again. If that Desktop Weather thingy pops up again, I'll give it up again. It's almost as persistent as AIM!

    Bob,

If dragging the Weather thingy to the Navigation Customize window doesn't work, you can always do this:

    Right click the Toolbar
    Click on Customize
In the Customize window, in the lower right, click on Add Multibar
Name it Trash, Junk, or whatever

Highlight Multibar on the right under "Toolbars: "
Now: drag the weather thingy to the Multibar
Ensure that Multibar is still highlighted, then click on "Remove "
No more multibar, and no more weather thingy...

    Ramona,

I followed your earlier advice after re-installing. Guess what? This time there was a choice displayed to accept or not the "Desktop Weather" thingy. Needless to say, I selected the negative and all seemed to go well.

I'm now operating with a rather impressive browser which accesses Thunderbird (TB) with relative ease. I'm still not converted yet -- we'll see what lies ahead.

    Thanks,

    Bob :)

    Bob,
I have been pretty angry at the fact that the button starts as E-mail setup, and when you do whatever you do to set it up it turns into Webmail.
It almost fooled me, when I started setting my Cox POP account, and when I was done, it did not access it, nor the account went away, although removed...
until I restarted NS. Then there was no trace of the Cox account, and Webmail had turned into E-mail setup again. The Webmail button remained Webmail after I set up at least one webmail account.
You may have had the coice of installing Desktop Weather, but I never noticed, so it must have be No, by default. I have uninstalled and reinstalled NS8.01 twice.
Are we agreeing, more or less? But, I noticed that if I enter the zip code, on installing, my Weather button will be on two of my toolbars.

I posted, but could not return to the website. When I clicked cancel, I was stuck, and repost it when I said yes.

The full version 8.01 I installed asked for my zipcode and stated that it was to locate my weather information. Perhaps if you left that blank you wouldn't get the weather bug installed? I know it didn't ask whether or not I wanted it.

    Bob,

So glad to hear that you got rid of your Weather report! I had totally forgotten that an option was in the install. You will have some bumps, and miss some of the Fx features, but it's fun to use. It grows on you, but believe me, I'm really not trying to convert any Fx user to Netscape. I only want to make it clear that it is a slick browser, and so far, I've found it very stable. Netscape did a darned good job this time around.

Thanks Dennis for clearing up the Weather option, and I've attached a screen shot of that Options Window.

BillyBob, I'm thinking that perhaps you enabled the IE rendering engine option, and that's why you did an auto switch to IE when listing to the audio on the religious site?

    Ramona, Westside,

I like the overall look and feel of NS8 but still not comfortable with all its features. That'll change with time.

One thing that is odd: On the first install, I had an "AdBlocker" button on the lower right of the screen. It allowed me, by left clicking and selecting "Remove IFrame" or "Remove Image ". With this second install: It ain't there -- nowhere to be found!!! Whuzzup with that?

    Westside,

I think we're are in tune but you are having symptoms I haven't experienced -- at least not yet. The last one, for instance, where you couldn't get back to your orig. page. Tried to dupe it but it works properly every time (???). Appears there might be an 8.02 version in the offing pretty soon, I suspect.

Wish list: Give the user the means NOT install AOL "stuff" -- I'm trying to be nice now. There is some registry residue and other "stuff" in the \Programs\netscape folder.

    Havin' phunne!

    Bob :D

    Hi,
just to make things clear. I could not get back to the original page, because the website or web hosting did not. This happened the first time which I went to IE. The website said something to the effect that it was busy, and to try again in one hour. I would like to be able to check sites without exiting other browsers, but this one did not, and even exiting the browser which I was testing originally was not good enough. I havve cable, and I like to see browsers sisde by side.
This had nothing to do with any specific browser.
As for the AOL stuff, keep in mind that AOL owns Netscape. As for AOL stuff, what stuff? I know that it bothers people, but I never see it, or pay attention to it, even less look for it. It is their privilege. It is a free program, after all.
If anything I dislike to be unable to block, without special steps, ar.atwola.com or atwola.com which are from AOL, in any browser, and are the worst "carriers" of unwanted ads, popups and spyware in general.
and, thanks for pointing out that the Weather was carried by Weatherbug. The buttons are gone.
And, I never saw anything in the lower right. This may have become part of the preferences.

I meant that no browser was playing including IE6. So, since Ramona said that it was a .wav file, I decided to check my preferences, and another player had stolen the WMP preferences. But that was not it. So, I decided that since you mentioned quicktime, I should check that, and I had to go to manual install.
And, I saw something interesting. That there was a Quicktime7. Now, it was my golden oppotunity to mess everything up, because I has 6.5.1 installed only a few days ago when I installed itunes4.8. This happened after FF1.0.4 was installed, but before 8.0.1. So, if QT7 would be installed, may itunes would get messed up. But what I ended up was iTunes4.8 setup which would install QT6.5.1 all over. I go through the process, and I checked iTunes first. No problem. Then NS8.0.1 and I select one of the songs, to be played as IE and I get almost blasted off my chair. It does the same as Firefox. I had been using Firefox, all along, and I try the page, and I jhad turned down the volume, and it plays.
That goes to show you! As for me.
One for each browser which I used! Time to go mow the lawn!
