    Hello

Try as I might, I cannot make NS 7.x the default browser for links embedded into Eudora 5.x.

I have checked and double checked NS preferences as set out for making NS 7 the default browser as posted in NS Solutions; NS shows it IS the default; and in IE, the line `IE should check to see it ...' is disabled.

Regardless of what I do, whenever there's a URL address embedded into an in-bound Eudora message, the URL is opened in IE, not in Netscape.

I ran a search and could not find where this problem had been dealt with earlier [I thought it had]. In fact, I thought I had succeeded and that such embedded URLs were opening in NS but I cannot be sure.

    Any thoughts anybody?

    Thank you.

    Hi Welt,

    Close Netscape
Backup your user.js or prefs.js, then add this line to your user.js file, if you have created one, or to your prefs.js file:

    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", true);

    Default Browser for Eudora 5.x

    Hello again Ramona

I will make the change you have suggested and let you know what happens although it might be a while.

Whether or not IE 5.5 or NS 7.x is called by Eudora, seems to depend upon origin. For example, when I clicked on the links embedded in the notices of response for this and my other query, Eudora sent them to Netscape 7.x.

On the link I rec'd from a sender using Outlook Express 5.5, Eudora called IE.

Perhaps the command line will change all.

    Thanks.

    Hi Ramona

Just saw your additional comments posted to your Netscape site.

I added the line to the Eudora.ini file but I'm uncertain re making the Registry changes.

My existing Registry already contained the following entry:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command]
    C:\PROGRA~1\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe /m %1

The current Registry mail to command contains:

    default C:program Files\OutlookExpress\MSIMN....

Below the above, the following appears:

Mail to: [Default] "URL: Mail to Protocol "
    Edit Flags 02 00 00 00
    URL Protocol " "

What do I do with the following?

    C:\PROGRA~1\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe /m

You say the URL:MAILTO PROTOCOL listing should point to Eudora but where do I place the above line?

    Thanks Ramona

    Hi Welt,

Have you configured all your settings in Eudora to make it the default Mail Client? Check this Eudora Knowledge Base Article:

Eudora as default mail program interacting with Netscape

    Document ID: 1947HQ

Adding the script to the prefs.js or user.js file should have done the trick, if all your settings are correct.

    The path you asked about:
    C:\PROGRA~1\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe /m

Should appear in your Registered File Types: URL:MAILTO PROTOCOL listing

    Open Windows Explorer
    Click on View
    Click on Folder Options
    Click on File Types
    Scroll to URL:MailTo Protocol
It should show: Open with Eudora

    Click on Edit
    Highlight "Open "
    Then click on Edit
    Is Eudora shown as:
    Application used to perform action

The target line should be as shown above:
    C:\PROGRA~1\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe /m

I would caution you about changing a Registered File Type. This can cause serious problems in Windows. It could even be cause for having to reformat the HD, so use caution. Copy the existing target line first, in the event any edit you should chose to make does not correct the problem.

Frankly, I would not edit the line. I'm ultra conservative when it comes to Windows. You should be able to make Eudora the default WITHOUT having to make such drastic edits. It should be accomplished through Eudora configuration, and the added script to the Netscape prefs.js or user.js File.

Have you considered updating the Eudora application. You don't give the complete Version, so not certain whether or not it is the most recention version. That too could be helpful, and the Help files should give you specific configuration information.

Consider yourself duly cautioned, and forewarned.

    Hi again Ramona,

Glad I asked about that Mail To Protocol. The way I read the Netscape Solutions article, I thought it was referring to the Registry and not to the File Types list: Explorer\View etc.

I have read the Eudora help docs and as far as I can tell, I comply and I've checked my registered file types and the URL one clearly shows Eudora.exe/ m. The `prefs.js' and INI files are fine as far as I can see. In fact, Eudora advises against editing the former.

The sole difference I can see is that my Eudora is `C:\Eudora\Eudora.exe /m' by choice. Should make NO difference.

Netscape recognizes Eudora as the mail program and the messages I get from Windows BBS and your Nestscape Solutions URL's with the embedded links, most assuredly open Netscape.

Still links embedded in Outlook Express created emails, persist in opening Internet Explorer despite all settings.

It's uneerily like Microsoft wrote it's Outlook Express to `override' all other user defaults. Oh yes, I get NO error messages, just the wrong browser.

I don't recall this happening with NS 4.79 but I cannot vouch one way or the other.

My Eudora version is 5.1 but I don't see the need to pay for the 5.2 upgrade. Latter does offer sufficient working changes to my mind.

Given that an upgrade is available, it's a hassle to reinstall Eudora as it wants to switch me to `ad-supported' despite my registration. I have to modify the installation sometimes with difficulty.

    Again thanks

    Ron

    Ron,

From a Search on the Eudora KB:

    Default Web Browser (Windows)

    Document ID: 1317HQ

    ISSUE:

How do I set my default web browser in Eudora?

    OR

I double click on a URL in Eudora and it doesn't open with the correct web browser or it opens an error message or it doesn't do anything.

    SOLUTION:

Eudora uses the default web browser in Windows to open URLs. To determine what your default web browser is, do the following-

    Get connected to the Internet.
    Go to Start: Run:
    Type http://www.eudora.com
    Click OK

This will force Windows to open the URL http://www.eudora.com in the default web browser. If the browser that Windows brings up is not the web browser you want Eudora using, then re-install your preferred web browser. After you re-install it, launch it and it will ask you if you want to make it your default web browser. Say YES.

If Windows brings up the URL correctly but Eudora does not, then do the following-

    Launch Eudora
Hold down the keys CTRL and SHIFT
Keeping those keys held down, go to Tools: Options
It will prompt you to reset your Eudora Settings - say YES
Restart Eudora and double click on a URL

As Eudora does indeed advise against editing the prefs.js file, then it is indeed an incongruity.

These two Eudora KB Articles contradict that statement, and in fact refer the Eudora user to a Mozilla FAQ, which explains how to add the script to the prefs.js file:

    http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2450hq.html
    http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2451hq.html
Eudora as default mail program for Mozilla

    Refers to this Mozilla Article:

3.3. Can I use a different mail program with Mozilla?

    Windows, Macintosh:
To make Mozilla use another mail program, you can either
    (a) uninstall Mozilla, then re-install using Browser Only (Mail/News not installed),
    or
    (b) add this line to user.js:

    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", true);

This will open the system default mail program when you click on an e-mail link in Mozilla.
    ---

This would also apply to Netscape 7.02.

    Thanks again Ramona,

Re Eudora's contradictory advice, unless I'm on another planet or in a horrid codeine haze, the Eudora document you earlier referenced in your reply of April 13 at 23:10 hrs., does caution again editing the prefs.js file, to wit:

    From said document ID-1947HQ:

Do not try to manually edit the prefs.js file. Depending on whether Eudora is the default mail program, it will check and if necessary modify the prefs.js each time it is launched.

Entering http://www.eudora.com in RUN does indeed open Eudora in Netscape. I have not said yes to ye olde Ctrl-Shft open tools and options as to do so will strip every setting I've added to my INI file but will perhaps try it later. I have used it before but first I must find my Eudora password and print a copy of the INI file for reference.

Despite Netscape 7.02 being the default browser, the inbound message of Tuesday from a friend using Outlook Express 5.5, still opens the embedded message using IE 5.5. I have tried stripping the Eudora INI file as the only thing left to try...or live with this `weird' response. IF Eudora is indeed editing the prefs.js file after IE reacts, then it's doing no good since the latter event occurs repetitively

    Hi Ron,

You have not been transported to another planet. I know what the article said about editing the prefs.js file, and after reading it again, because I was put off by the contradiction, I meant to go back and edit my post, but was in too big a hurry. Sorry 'bout that. I did edit the post for the sake of other readers not being totally confused.

    Hi Ramona

No apology needed. Just happy I could pick up on that...nice to get something right these days.

Thanks for all your assistance. I'll watch to see what happens when the next Outlook Express email arrives with an embedded URL. In fact, I may try to get somebody to send me another.

    Take care.

    Browser Call Report

    Hi Ramona

Further to my message of April 14: I'm sorry to be so long getting back as promised. I've done some testing of embedded URLs in email messages and found:

    Eudora - several versions
    Outlook Express - 5.00.2919.6600
    Outlook Express - 5.00.2615.200?
    Outlook Express - 5.50.4133.2400
    Outlook Express - 6.00.2800.1106
    MS Outlook - Build 10.0.2616

ALL the above work in that they call Netscape 7.02 as the default browser.

    Outlook Express - 5.50.4522.1200

Does NOT work because it persists in calling IE 5.5 as its browser no matter how many DIFFERENT messages I test.

Must be a bug in the latter. I simply don't have an answer. My OS is Win 98 Spec Ed.

    Another Refusal-Slow Loading

    Hi Ramona,

A wee update about emails that refuse to recognize Netscape 7.02 as the default browser:

RCA uses an unidentified email client that also refuses to recognize Netscape 7.02 and persists in calling IE 5.5. It won't change it's mind.

I also continue to find web pages that won't work with NS 7.02.

Above solely as an informational update.

By the way, NS is becoming more and more slow to load. The splash screen sits forever it seems and then suddenly appears with a blank page [as configured]. This is with Win 98SE , 320 RAM and a Pentium III 800 system.
