Hello all im new to this forum!

The problem i am running into is that im running windows XP pro and using 2 logons. One logon for my myself and on for my wife, both with admin access(just so we can have our own prefs etc). I installed NS7 under my logon and setup went fine email setting and everything worked. When i logged off and went to my wifes logon and set up email and navigator home page everything seemed to work fine. However when the computer was rebooted, and logged on under my wifes logon all settings are lost an NS mail greets me with the setup new email account wizard and the homepage setting is back to default. But when starting my logon (in which is was installed) it works fine. Her email and homepage set up is only lost when the computer is shut down and rebooted. If i set it up, logoff and then logon again it works, yet after shutdown and reboot it is gone. Ive tried setting up new user profiles under her account with no luck. We both use the same email account and address and i had no problem doing this under outlook express. I also noticed that under her logon after installation not all of the programs were listed in the start menu, certain things were missing (winamp, net2phone etc). Should i attempt to install it under her logon again?

Is netscape just losing the profile on my wifes logon, and can it be restored?

    thanks
    -jamie

    Welcome to the Forum, jamesf!

    Hi James,

Have you installed the Windows XP Service Pack? I am reading on the Netscape NG's that it can cause serious problems with applications, which include Netscape.

    On your wife's Profile:
Ensure that the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings|Server Settings|Local Directory Location point to the correct location. You might even try leaving the Mail on the Server in her Profile to see if that might work.

Why some of the components are missing from her Profile remains a mystery to me. I am definitely not Windows XP literate, so I will need to do some more investigating to see if I can get any information related to your problems, if in fact it is not related to the XP Service Pack.

Hi Ramona, nice to meet you!

I havent installed SP1, my computer has been running great w/out it so i am reluctant to install it. (ive kept up with all of the updates prior to SP1)

Ive been searching around the net and have found a few things....

one person mentioned making sure the profile directory in her account is not set to 'read only' (why it would be i dont know)

another mentioned uninstalling and reinstalling might fix the problem. I did not have a previous netscape install on the computer prior to NS 7

    thanks for your help!

    Hi Jamie,

Well, at least we can eliminate the Service Pack as a culprit. I'll keep searching, and see if I can come up with anything. Also try leaving the mail on the server in your wife's Profile, and see if you keep getting the Mail Wizard.

This must have to do with the two Admin. Logon, but the fact that it nukes some of the Netscape components on reboot is quite unusual.

    Ramona-

It seems as if is is not saving the settings when the computer is shut down. As long as i dont reboot the computer the settings will remain. From other groups ive been searching ive found similar instances with windows NT and 2000 when people are setting up multiple logon accounts on one computer. But no luck on how to fix it.

Hope i can get it figured out, i dont like IE....but at least it works on my account! hehehe :)

    thanks again,
    -jamie

    Hi Jamie,

I really would like to nail this down for you, and yes, I agree that the problem lies in the double Admin. Logon in XP. I will post back if and when I find a solution.

    Hi Jamie,

In a word... Yes. Install Netscape, the entire program, when in your wife's logon . Since it isn't working with unique Profiles, then try this, and see if it might solve the problem. It will take up additional HD space, but worth it, if the problem is fixed. This was a suggestion in the Netscape 7 Newsgroup.

Let us know if this solves your problem.

    Ramona-

I finally got everything to work. First i checked the folders where the profiles were supposed to be created, and they werent there. The user folder was 'read only' and would not let me change it no matter what i tried (my settings were now lost as well). I uninstalled netscape in the usual manner, then manually removed the folder under program files (since it was left there after uninstall). Rebooted the computer and made sure NO background progs were running at all. Reinstalled, set up and both logons work the same now. Hopefully it wont go bad again.

    Thanks for all your help.

jamie - glad you got it working.

For future reference, when you run into things that behave like your folders did - not allowing you to make changes - it often helps to "take ownership" which you should be able to do with an administrator account even if you can't make changes.

Oddly enough, after the "take ownership" you can probably make changes. I've never figured out why this works but I know it does work most times with any NT system from 3.x on up to 5.1.

    Hi Jamie,

I'm delighted to hear that you are now able to use both Profiles! Excellent troubleshooting on your part!
