    Trials & Tribulations with NS 7.02 ~

    The highlights:

Loaded 7.02 on a Windows 98 SE machine running 4.79. All was well - old e-mails + Bookmarks loaded into 7.02 just fine.
    Oh Happie Daze! ;)

Several days of getting aquainted and successful surfing.

After a loooong session of surfing, using two or three open NS page windows; I noticed 7.02 had slowed down - long delays in reading / closing e-mails + pages taking 2 minutes to load & display...
"Closed" all open windows and mail...
Somebody *hung up* and wouldn't close - did a CNTL + ALT + DEL and NetScape was *not responding*... Ended Task.
    Re-started NetScape 7.02 and ~
NUTS! Lost the Bookmarks. Put em back in with Ramona's help; and...
*Away We Go*! Back up to speed - everything *works* again.

Had this happen a few times since - If I shut all open windows *soon* enough - we can re-start without loosing anything and All Is Well...

    Friday things changed...
    Browsing & E-mail slowed;
I closed windows - two of em *hung up* and required C+A+D closure...
AND NETSCP *still* shownig as running.
Did a C+A+D End Task on that.

    Re-Started NS 7.02...
    Uhhhh-Oooooh... No Bookmarks (again)...
Annnnd ~ NS7.02 *No Workie* no more... :(
The Control Panel of NS 7.02 displays OK; but it
will not *DO* anything - cursor even hangs up and jumps instead of *glides* across screen + won't *click* on anything.

    Soooo ~
    What's da *FIX* ??
    Un-install NS 7.02 using Windows remove program;
or go *in* and try to repair things?

*IF* I un-install 7.02 - will BookMarks and stored E-mails fall back into NS 4.79 without loosing anything?
Presently - all BookMarks and all e-mails ARE Alive & Well and accessable via NS 4.79.

    Suggestions - Please!

    Hi Phred,

Well heck, this is not good news! :( Let's try a few simple workarounds:

    Disable "empty trash on exit"
    EDIT|MAIL & NEWS ACCOUNTS|ACCOUNT SETTINGS|SERVER SETTINGS

What Theme are you using? If it is any Theme other than Modern, then change back to the Modern Theme.

If neither of these workarounds help, then I would Creat a New Profile

Post back and let us know if you continue to have problems.

    Ramona :D

    Is... It... *working*... ???

    Ramona ~~

Not sure if I believe this or not - but
NS 7.02 *seems* to have recovered... ??

Since the Friday melt-down, the puter's been bugging me and trying to run a disk check every time it starts up - I let it have it's way this AM...

WHAT SAY!?? A Bad  Sector... OMG!
    Involving file: \Mozilla\Profiles\meName\gibberish.SLT\Mail\MailServ~1.com\Inbox.MSF
    Ya don't say!
    Sure; go ahead an FixIt...
Did a DeFrag for the heck of it, too...

All done - I peeked at 7.02's Profile stuff in "gibberish.SLT...
Hmmmm, *Looks* OK (Like as if I know what "looks OK "...)
Made a backup of the Whole Profile File...
Looks like I copied bout 30mB of e-mails... Oh Well....

Fired up NS 4.79 - Still works and e-mails seem to be intact.

Shut down 4.79; took a DEEP breath; and fired up 7.02...
OMG#2... It opened up e-mail and a browser window!
    Wonder if they *work*??

YEP!! :) 7.02 seems to work again!
E-mails there; browser works (using it (7.02) to compose this!)

    Soooo....
Was the 7.02 Flakeyness due to the failing Sector - or did 7.02 *smack* the HD on it's way to the melt-down?
Prolly only the Puter Godz will know.

    Your suggestions...
Disable "empty trash on exit "...
Forgot to look - but I don't think it WAS active - always have a full trash file unless I manually *dump* it.

"What Theme am I using? "
    Now there's a Neat Question!

Cuz I dunnow - and 7.02 doesn't seem to want to tell me...

Edit - Appearance - Themes > lists 2 "Themes to Use" - Modern and Classic - with neither one HiLighted, Checked, Underlined - nuffin!
Under "View" - they both show up again - with neither marked nor checked...

I don't remember choosing or selecting a Theme - I think I took what was offered without actually checking anything.

As for the HD problem - that is now the First and Only *bad Sector* on the drive - -
Wonder if that is a warning of things to come... HOPE not!

Any thoughts on WHY?? 7.02 seems to slow down after a few hours of browsing??

That slow down is the only bad vibe that pre-warns of a later lock-up of the 7.02 browser. And it's a little bit difficult to detect that it IS slowing down...

    Phred
