    Ramona:

I have used the Yahoo Finance site to track financial information for several years. In attempting to access the site yesterday, I was directed to the log-in page (this occurs periodically to verify the user). After entering the correct ID and password, I received an error message saying that I could not log-in because my browser will not accept cookies. My browser is NS 7.0.

No new software has been installed on the machine, so I did the following:

    1. Cleared all Yahoo cookies from the cookie file.
    2. Cleared History, Memory cache and Disk cache.
    3. Verified the Preferences>Privacy & Security> Cookies setting to be Enable Cookies for the Originating Website Only ( an acceptable option under NS 7.0 per Yahoo).
    4. Closed and reopened NS 7.0.

Attempting to access the site again, I received the same error message. I then used IE to access the site and was able to log-in successfully. So, I assume the issue lies with NS somewhere. Yahoo tech support suggests the browser may be corrupted and it may be necessary to re-install to overcome the issue -- something I'd prefer not to do.

Do you have any other suggestions to resolve the problem?

    Hey Bob,

Long time no see, and sorry to hear you're having problems! O.K., it has been a long time since I used 7.0, so I don't remember the exact cookie settings. Is there a tab in the Manage Cookies that allows you to see a list of cookies which cannot be stored? If so, did you check that list as well?

I would not reinstall Netscape, as that is a copout on the Yahoo help.

    Try enabling, Accept All Cookies

    Close Netscape:
Go to your *.slt folder and do the following:
    (C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt)

    Delete the entire Cache Folder
    Delete the history.dat file
    Delete the XUL.mfl file

    Open Netscape and try again.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

    Ramona

    Hello Ramona!

Thanks for the reply and you'll be pleased to know that you haven't lost the magic touch!

I went to Edit> Preferences> Privacy & Security> Cookies. Under Manage Stored Cookies, there are two tabs: Stored Cookies & Cookie Sites. I had looked at Stored Cookies and removed the Yahoo cookies that were filed there, but I hadn't looked under the Cookie Sites tab. There, sites are listed as "Can Store Cookies" or "Cannot Store Cookies ". Sure enough www.yahoo.com was listed as "Cannot Store Cookies ". I deleted the site in the list, closed and re-opened Navigator, and was able to sign-in and re-establish the cookie for the site. So, we're back in business.

A little feedback on a separate subject. The Intellisource and Intellitxt servers the site is using are really slow lately, at least for we dial-up types. When they're contacted, you sit dead in the water for 30+ seconds before continuing and you usually have to pass through them at least twice on each individual interaction with the Board. Thought you folks ought to know.

Thanks again for the help, as always. Hope all is well back there in the winter wonderland -- I understand you should be thawed out by early July. Take care.

    BirdieBob,
glad you found the source of the problem, but I never found a site with restrictions like yours, unless I selected it. myself. And, I checked, just in case. The only site I found, is one which I entered, because it is so insidious. It is good old atwola.com, the darkest side of AOL, and a number of websites make use of it, to by-pass the popup controls.
We 63 in Omaha, today, and, by tomorrow, almost the snow will be gone. Getting ready for the next bout. I lived for a number of years in the south Bay area, and, I do, still miss its weather. Not the City's.

Hey, it was 62º at my house today! :p But let me tell you, I love San Francisco! We lived in Sacramento for three years, so only about 90 miles from San Francisco, and about the same to Tahoe. We alternated on weekends, and I just couldn't get enough of San Franciso. Not to live, but to visit!

The problem I ran into wasn't because of the site. Several days ago, I was browsing a lot of sites to do some availability and pricing comparisons on some home remodeling items we're researching. Most of those sites flood you with cookies, good & bad, and I wanted to avoid that, so I set my preferences to "ask before setting a cookie ". That allowed me to deny those I didn't want. Although that worked fine for the intended purpose, my guess is that I went to Yahoo and mistakenly denied the cookie request without thinking about it before I reset the preferences to "accept only cookies from the originating site ". That would have put the "cannot set a cookie" restriction in place for Yahoo, until I found and removed it with the help of Grand Wizard Ramona.

Enjoy your weather while it lasts. The high sitting over the west coast at the moment (73 here yesterday) is due to break-up by late Sunday and the jet stream will slide down toward us from Seattle once again. That usually means stroms passing through us and your neck of the woods while heading east. We're in Tiburon on the southern tip of Marin County -- normally, we're in sunshine while looking across the Bay at the city periodically in fog. There can be a 20 degree difference in temperature between here and the city when the fog's in, but as you know, that's our natural air conditioning that keeps us from becoming a desert like the southern part of the state. I'm sure The Governator would love to have you back out here!

    BirdieBob,
I learned not to mess with the cookie dough.
Yes, I wish I was there. I lived in El Cerrito, Menlo Park and Palo Alto, at different times.

OK, OK -- I'll subscribe!! I wouldn't mind the ads being placed if they did it efficiently rather than at the pace of pushing peanut butter up-hill.

62, huh? I imagine that probably boiled the thermostat while everbody was running around in shorts, right? You know in your heart-of-hearts that San Francisco is just a quiet, middlle of the road, understated, conservative little place sitting out here on the left coast. There has been a noticeable drop here in consumption of cabernets and merlots in recent years -- that wouldn't have any connection to your exit from Sacramento, would it? Sacto's really a much nicer place post-Gray Davis, so think about coming back and giving us a hand trimming our little deficit down to a managable size. Roseville is booming again and San Francisco, Monterey, Napa, Tahoe & Palm Springs are fairly decent places to hang-out. Arnold & all of us would love to have you back, so think about it............
