    Hi Ramona:

In the midst of a session last night, my NS 7.0 browser suddenly became incapable of connecting to any site. The error message "Alert: Connection was refused to [site address]" appears whenever a connection is attempted. Email is functioning normally for both sending and receiving. I'm connecting here thru IE. What do you suggest? Thanks.

Hard to tell if this happened really in a middle of a session, rather going from one website to another. did you try empty your Cache? More may necessary, but I have seen a behavior like you describe on specific sites (problem was eliminated when I upgraded to 7.1, and now 7.2). Any other, previously, visited sites were ok. Did you try closing NS and then reopening it.

Actually did happen in the midst of a session. Thereafter, no previous or new sites were accessible. I did close and reopen NS (several times); reboot the entire system (several times); emptied cache, history, temp files (recycle and trash are cleared regularly, mail files regularly compacted) but with no improvement. Ran virus scan with nothing found. Mail & Newsgroup settings, server settings appear to be correct.

Looks like corruption impacting non-mail server communications. I'd like to be sure all available options have been explored before resorting to re-installing NS -- this installation has been very stable for a long while and I'd like to hold onto it if possible.

This issue is now resolved. Although I thought I had checked my Proxy settings when this began, I apparently did not. Somehow the settings were modified. Once I corrected them, everything was back to normal.

I'm still interested in how those settings could change during the course of an active session. If anyone has and ideas on that, please let me know.

I don't have any idea how the settings could change. My present ISP is perfectly happy with a direct connection to the internet. My previous one insisted on a proxy setting, which was a bit flaky.
