I recently upgraded from NS 4.77 to NS 7.0. Everything is working really well EXCEPT succeeding at getting W98SE to accept NS 7 as the default mail handler. Browser default set ok.

When I click on the preference box in NS (or the dialog box) to set as default, I get an error message advising me that 'a registry key could not be set'.

NS 4.77 was the default mail handler and there are no other mail programs configured on the system. There is a blackice firewall and norton AV installed. OS is W98SE.

What do i need to do to the registry to fix this ?

    Thanks,
    Peter

Welcome to the Forum, Peter Craig!

    Hi Peter,

Sorry to be so long in answering your post. I certainly overlooked it yesterday!

    To answer your question:
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System.

Under "File types ", check "HTML ", "XML" and "XHTML"

Under "Protocols ", check "http ", and "https ".

    netscape 7 default mail

    Ramona,
Thanks for the reply. The file types and protocols are already selected and the browser default works fine.

The non functional default is purely email, and specifically the the connection to the 'right click send to mail recipient' function, as well as the pop up 'Do you want netscape to be default email ?' which I turned off. Clicking on an email address embedded in an MS word doc launches netscape ok.

I didn't have this issue with NS 4.77 which was my prior email & browser.

I noticed on the netscape mozila windows newsgroup one other person with the same problem, which manifests as an error dialog box when I try to set the mail default. The error message tells me that the program cannot update a registry key, but fails to specifiy what key.

    Any clues ?
    Thanks,
    peter

There is a chance that it could be this registry key (but no guarantees):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail

As you expand the registry key, you may see Netscape (4.x) listed there.

Is it possible that your antivirus is preventing N7 from setting the registry entries, assuming N7 uses the above key? Perhaps someone who uses N7 for their default mailer can post and let us know if they have the above key... And what is listed for N7 if it is present. (paging Ramona)

That looks about right. Hopefully Peter has something similar in his registry for N7. Obviously full backups are recommended before dealing with the registry.

    NS 7 mail defaul

    Ramona & Tranquilo,
Thanks for the registry data. I checked the keys in my registry and they match Ramona's. Unfortunately NS 7 still doesn't think it's the default mail program.

As I said previuosly, clicking on embedded email addresses properly invokes 'URLmailto' in NS, so that part works.

The right click (on a file) sendto mail recipient function doesn't however..

Still looking for the silver bullet solution,
    Thanks much.
    Peter

    Peter,

In C:\Windows\SendTo Folder, have you created a shortcut for Netscape 7.0 Mail & Newsgroups? I just tried to do that, and it didn't work. As you say, it works beautifully in Messenger, but SendTo for Netscape 7.0, simply opens the browser with whichever file I selected, in an open browser window? Is that what you're seeing too?

Let me check around and see what the NG has to offer on this subject.

I also noted today, in the Mail Inbox, I highlighted and tried to copy multiple emails, as I always did in Messenger. That was a no go also. You can do it with a single email, but not multiple. I closed Netscape and copied the mail I wanted from the Inbox file. Always a way to get around it! ;)

    Hi Peter,

Well, we're chasing our tails here, because the SendTo feature doesn't work in Netscape 7.

However... I found a Registry fix written by Warren C. Austin, one of the Netscape guru's, on the netscape 7.windows NG. This is the thread:
    snews://secnews.netscape.com/3D72CC35.7040200@houseofellithorpe.com

You can do a Message Search for mozmail.reg or moznews.reg and see his four Registry files available for saving.

NOTE: I haven't tried these files, I do not recommend nor endorse them. This is for information only. Use at your own risk.

    NS 7 as default mail

    Ramona,
Thanks for confirming that we're chasing tails here. I was beginning to feel that way.

I was going to ask you about forcing a shortcut in the sendto folder or whether the reg keys I have for sendmail were correct, but I think you've answered that.

I'll try the reg patch and see if that works. I use the norton regedit which has an undo for when I really mess it up.

    I'll advise on the outcome.

    NS 7.0 as default mail

    Ramona,
The registry patches added the sendto protocol, but it didn't link up with the windows explorer send to function, even with dropping a short cut into the send to folder.

I don't think we're going to get there on this feature. If I get a workaround, I'll post it.

Thanks for the help. Close the thread.

Just a thought, but did you try and set it through the Internet Options in the Control Panel? Since IE is so closely tied to Windows Explorer, this may be worth a try.

    NS 7.0 as default mail

    Brooks,
Thanks for the idea. I tried that early on...and yes you can select NS 7 as the default mail that way, but the behavior on 'send to' doesn't change.

I think we accept Ramona's conclusion, ie 'Send To' doesn't work for NS 7 in W98SE. Perhaps it was tested on W2K or XP which I'm told have some different registry structures.

    Thanks again,
    Peter
