    Hello,

Been having some problems with NS 4.79 crashing many times (months!)and before I downloaded it again to reinstall it, I decided to back up my user directory or rather renamed it 'user-b4'.

I then decided I would not install the new one but in fact try the original NS again. I started it up and of course the preferences weren't there. I closed it and renamed the user directory back to
what it was and started up NS.

It found the mail okay but somehow I can't find my news. It is still all there in the directory but the program can't see it.

How can I get it to re-see my news ?

    Thanks

    Dave

    File corrupted, I would suggest.

    OR are those files Read-only??

The simplest way is to move those files out of the folder, and use Netscape Messenger to create new database for news. I know it is a pain.

    I found an article at
http://www.UFAQ.org/navcom/subscr.html saying that either the path to your News folder might be incorrect or the News folder's fat file could be corrupted

The article at http://help.netscape.com/kb/consumer/19980915-60.html mentioned the the entire News folder could also be corrupted.
Creating a new News folder worked for me. I also went into preferences, Mail and Newsgroups, Newsgroup Server afterwards and used the "choose" button to reselect my News folder, even though the path seemed correct, just to be on the safe side.

    Welcome to the Forum!

    Hi ozrock,

If the above solution doesn't work, you may have to go one step further:

Remove the news server from the liprefs.js & prefs.js files. Not the whole line just the news server name.

NOTE: To preserve your newsgroups in the future, simply bookmark them. When the bookmark is clicked, it automatically subscribes both the server and group:

    Highlight the Bookmark link
    Open Bookmarks
    Select File Bookmark
    Navigate to the correct folder.

Saves a lot of grief in the long run!

    Thank guys 'n' gals !!

Thank you guys and gals, I will initiate them all as soon as I get a moment free and will post the results for any who have the same/sim problem in the future.

BTW Because of the crashes prior to this news thing, I decided to uninstall the NS I had on from the Add/Remove area and put a new one on.

I had forgotten to rename the user files, yet it found them automatically even though I installed the later NS in a different folder. Seems like it goes looking for some particular file to determine where the users are no matter what the directory is called and where it is. Seem right?

There is a corrupt file I am sure now as even though I have subscribed news again 2 times, when I boot to NS they are not there. Your answeers cover that I think too.

    Regards from Down Under

    Dave:)

    Hi Dave,

Yes, by all means post back and let us know how it goes with your Newsgroups. We want to make sure you are up and running, with no problems!

You might also check out my page which covers a "Clean" Install of Communicator. Gets rid of any corrupt files when reinstalling or upgrading.

Best wishes to you "Down Under" ;)

How do you know ozrock is from AU?

    Ramona,

Just wonder how do you know that Ozrock is from Australia or other "down under" countries? Not everyone uses "oz" to refer to Australia.
