    I installed MediaSurf 56K ISA Plug n Play Fax Modem. I use Mighty Fax SW. I can send faxes in my area code (7 digits) only. No boxes are checked in "Dialing Propertiesâ€. If I don’t put "1" in front of a 10-digit number, I see "Busy, redial" after 5th "“11th ring or it just rings and never connects. If I put "1" in frontof it, I see "Busy, redial" message after the first ring.
    What’s wrong?

    Do you have 10 digit dialing at all in your area? If yes, you might need to set up Area Code Rules. I have 3 area codes in my area to set up. Control Panel\Telephony then select Area Code Rules will take you to it.
    Good luck!

    Mark,
    I have no problems in my area, 7 digits. I have no subareas in my area. I have problems with long distance (10 digits or 11 digits) dialing only.

    Try going into Control Panel\Modem, select Properties. Click on Connection, check the box for Wait for dial tone before dialing, then click on Advanced, down in the box for Extra Settings, put in this string:
    S11=150
    The value after the = sign is the time between tones in milliseconds, you can control the speed of the dialing tones by changing this, it may be too fast for your phone service and you are getting the error. It wouldn't hurt to experiment with this.

    The box "Wait for dial tone" was already checked. "Use error control" was checked. I cancelled the check "Compress data" (I do not use my modem for Internet connection) and checked "Required to connectâ€. "Flow control" is checked too. Then "Hardware" is dotted.
    I tried your suggestions, with the same result: with 10 digits it dials but does not connect, with 11 digits it wants to redial after one ring.
    I discovered "Quick configuration analysis" option in MightyFax help menu. Will play with it now.
