I worked on a computer the other day that had an MS Antispyware infection. I used Combofix to clean it, and CF turned on Auto-Update. This computer does not have a genuine Windows installation, but it received more than 29 updates. Several boots and IE7 was installed. So MS lets invalid XPs get updates now? When did that change, and why? I'm glad for the user that they have the necessary security updates, but wonder what is the point of WGA if they are going to pass out the updates anyway? Does my user have a surprise coming besides the new star in the notification area? I suggested they buy a real XP CD or upgrade to Vista, but I don't know what they will do, and I suspect nothing if the computer continues to operate properly.

Security updates are available for all, including non Genuine. Has been the case for a long time (not sure if always).

Same thing goes for IE 7....MS removed the restrictions.

I think the emphasis is on Security updates - no other patches?

My understanding behind this is it is viewed as a responsible way to try to keep all users safe by trying to reduce risks and exposures to system infections across the board, sort of like preventing computer STD's, and so on and so on and so on...:)

Yes, ONLY critical security updates, nothing else (performance updates, compatibility fixes, non-critical fixes etc.
