Downloaded IE 8 and with it came NORTON, uninvited and unwanted as we have security, tried to uninstall from the right click on Norton, did not, tried to uninstall in 'Add/Remove', it just ignores every 'uninstall' command.
How can we uninstall the unwanted that persist in ignoring the 'uninstall' command in Add/Remove?

    Norton will not uninstall

A simple system restore to a point before you downloaded/installed IE will solve your problem. It will get rid of both IE and Norton.

PC owner, quote, " Downloaded IE 8 successfully but had Norton show on desktop" he cannot be sure when Norton arrived on his PC " It just showed up" " And I can't get rid of the b....y thing "
So the question is how could Norton get on his PC, if he did not invite it or pay for it. and How can he UNINSTAL it?

Question remains - where did he download IE 8 from? - there are many sources.
    Advice has been given above.

Got to agree with Pete. It sure didn't come from MS.

He was working on something on his PC and got a message that he should upgrade his IE from 6, so he downloaded IE by typing Internet Explorer 9( as suggested) in the Browser,Internet Explorer switched to IE 8 because he has XP OS, he tells me.
So where NORTON came from he has no idea. BUT, and THIS is the question, how can NORTON get into his PC WITHOUT request/download and without payment ?
He is not keen to do a system restore because he will have to re-install IE 8, so we will try again to uninstall from add/remove or Norton removal.

He got Norton because he went someplace and downloaded something and didn't read what else was going to be downloaded with it and didn't take the check out of the box not to download it. See these complaints all the time on different message boards. Not so much Norton, but other junk stuff.

Have him go to add remove programs and uninstall it from there.

I can't help but to wonder is malicious software is involved here.

Totally agree, MrBill. My relatives will install something at the drop of a hat without even looking at where it came from or what third party software comes with it.

That's when I get phone calls.

Thanks Mr Bill, I think you're correct, many times I have found our members not too sure what they were doing when a problem occurred, that's why we run a forum for the elderly.
We will have a go at add/remove, let you know result.
    Thanks all.

My new HP Notebook came with W8 AND Norton IS. It was obviously supported by HP. It is a 30 day trial and then you pay for the Licence if you want it.

But I agree, there are a lot of Software supplied with Delta, McAfee, Ask, Norton already CHECKED. The downloader must be very careful to read everything step by step as some installers have their "extras" two or three steps into the setup. Shrewd, cunning and downright invasive! Neil.

    Update on this problem,
I have the PC at home now, owner arrived with it 2200 hours last night.
He has a Norton Ikon .
We went to 'All Programs'found Norton clicked on it got 'Norton Scan' and 'Norton Uninstall' It did not uninstall Norton.
Went to Add/Remove found Norton, clicked to remove, waited, it did nothing.
Went to Evan Omo's suggestion 'Norton Removal Tool' it said it had removed all Of Norton and that we would have to re-start PC to take effect. did that,
Norton Ikon still there and in add/remove.
Norton window came up with a re-installation offer.
Earlier, task bar had shown 'Norton Google Chrome'
Could this be where Norton was introduced ?
We still have Norton on the Desktop and in add/remove
Norton had the audacity to put up a re-install offer and a 'Why are you leaving us'
we told them but they won't go.
Can remove other progs in add/ remove, as we did, to have a tidy up.
I think this was a Norton SCAN only , pay to correct the many faults the scan supposed to have found.
I remember ( or perhaps don't ) sometime back one of our members had something that she could not remove, even from add/remove, but can't remember solution.
I am keeping his PC to sort out ( or cause ) a few other problems.
    Thanks so far.
    Spanner.

PS. sorry forgot this, he also has a number of tabs showing 'behind' the working tab, such as 'ASK' 'Amazon ' and others, that all 'load' as the working browser is.
    Thanks. Spanner.

I checked out the installation of Chrome - Norton is NOT included in that download.

My guess is that the install of Norton is corrupt and I would normally suggest downloading again and installing over the top and then uninstalling it. In this case as the download location is unknown this is a non-starter.

I think your best bet is to try System Restore as posted above - be sure to select a restore point prior to the download of IE8.

PLEASE NOTE ; this has been moved to the Malware forum at the suggestion of Admin, keeping the same Title 'Norton' will not uninstall'
We should have a 'Moved' or 'Solution in progress in another forum' choices in 'Thread Tools'
So as we have not, I will leave this open until it has been sorted by 'Malware' .
Thanks to all who have tried to resolve the problem for us. let you know results later.

The thread has not been moved to the Malware & Virus Removal Forum - you were advised to post a new thread there - which you have done.

Only BBS Moderators can Move threads - generally because they are in the wrong forum - and a Redirect is normally left.

If this issue is resolved in the Malware & Virus Removal forum you should return to this thread and say so and then mark the thread as Resolved. Note - in the malware forum only Broni can flag a thread as resolved.

Response to PeteC, the ADMINS words were " Time for Malware forum" If one has to be specific, Admins words were not a request to post a "New Thread "to 'Malware' forum , more like a suggestion .
As far as I am concerned the problem is now in 'Malware' that is the forum that I will hope to get the solution, so however 'moved 'it is of no importance. that is where it is.
Have a nice day. it's raining here.

This problem has now been resolved, it was transferred to 'Malware' at the suggestion of 'Admin' but we resolved the problem by re-installing OS with full format of HD partition. this did not tell us what caused the problem but the owner did not have time to go thru a full posting of logs to Malware.
Thanks to all , we got there somehow. owner is happy.
