This happened once before with another installation and now AGAIN. I was trying
to install the Norton Personal Firewall 2002. Norton established a folder at c:\program files\norton personal firewall. The next step in the installation was to install the program files in that directory. Rather than installing the files I got a dialog box which said "Invalid Directory. You selected an invalid target directory or drive. Please select again. Norton personal firewall must be installed on a local hard drive. The directory cannot contain any accented or special characters, and you cannot install Norton Personal Firewall in the root or system directories.

Well - I didnt select the directory and folder, Norton did. I tried this several times with the same results. I even went into the program files folder and created a new folder then tried to install in it. Same dialog box appeared.

I dont know if this problem is specific to Norton Firewall or if there is some other problem with the Windows 98 OS thats causing this problem. I did experience this about a year ago with another program and never did get a resolution.

I am without a firewall until I can get a resolution on this. PLEASE HELP!

Sorry, can't help you with Norton. I've never had any success with any of their products other than Clean Sweep.

However, if you go to Free Firewall Software you can download a free firewall until you can get Norton figured out. Since you plan to uninstall it when you get Norton's installed, I don't recommend you get Zone Alarm. Although I use it on all my systems and it's worked flawlessly for me, it can be a bear to uninstall.

Just found this page on Symatec's site which deals with the error message you're getting.

Your right about ZA being hard to uninstall

Zone Alarm Pro is what started my problem. I was installing a ZAP update when there were problems. It took me literally hours to get all of the ZAP components out of the system ZAP worked just great but it bit the dust when I tried to update and it hung up my browser from getting on the internet. That part works just great and very hard to figure out how to get rid of that unwanted protection.

Anyway after another aborted effort to get ZAP reinstalled and continued problems I decided to use Norton Firewall. To add insult to injury, I then experienced the installation problem with Norton. Just wasnt my day I guess.

Thanks for the Free Firewall Link.

Miz, I cant thank you enough. I checked into the Symantec Link that you provided and followed their instructions. The basic problem was that my Autoexec.bat was specifying the temp file in the root C directory folder TEMP vs in the windows TEMP folder. I changed the autoexec to point to C:\windows\temp I also checked the other things that they suggested but I am pretty sure that this change is what prompted the success. Not only did Norton install and run properly but this also fixed an annoying problem that I have had with Netscape looking for the temp folder and not finding it.

So again thanks Miz and I like the Norton Firewall. I had been running Zone Alarm Pro for almost a year and had no problems (until the upgrade attempt). I also use Norton AntiVirus and the interface between the Norton Firewall and the Norton Antivirus is convenient and effecient. I went over to two of the firewall test sites and received Stealth reports on Norton.

I will get to bed earlier tonight. The problem last night kept me up until after 0400 this morning. :D
