Not sure whether this post should be under security or Windows XP, or maybe under another area, if I'm wrong, I apologize. I have checked most areas on the site and have reviewed F.A.Q.'s and didn't find the exact error type to be able to fix my install problem-- With all that said, here goes: I previously did the uninstall for Norton Internet Security 2004. This seemed to be successful and all other programs are still working. I've now tried to re-install Norton and it will start, but stops about 15 seconds into the install and gives me the following error "Error 1402. Could not open Key: UNKNOWN\COMCTL.listviewCtrl.1\CLSID Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel." Well....I've tried going thru regedit and changing permissions, but it didn't appear to have changed anything at all, guess I must not be checking the right box or something. Any suggestions?

    thanks in advance...

    PeteC,
I appreciate you giving me the links for the error and instructions to change the registry keys....but... :( I had issues trying to get it to change permissions on the COMCTL key following symantec instructions, and no way to fix that part, so I'm back to the well again...hoping for some other advice! I know that NIS works, I had it installed once before! I tried logging on as an administrator...in the safe mode....and still the same error!! Perhaps buying McAfee might have been a better option?

Symantec needs to listen up...this is why they lose people. When Norton works, it can't be beat, when it goes bad, the customer is in trouble. As you have discovered, uninstalling Norton is not as simple as it sounds. (Why did you decide to uninstall it, anyway?)

Norton is known for leaving a complete chaos in the registry following an uninstall, unfortunately, and even with determination, pliers and tweezers, the damage cannot ever be "repaired" completely without reinstalling Windows. When Norton installs, it spiders all over Windows, and takes over all online communication. Well, that's why we bought it, right? We said, "We trust you." and give Symantec total permissions, so that we're "safe ". But the most brilliant security minds on the planet cannot seem to create a decent uninstall program for any of their products. So if Norton goes bad, Windows is done. Okay, off my soapbox now.

I'm assuming you have followed the permissions settings instructions above, and have verified that you have set the necessary permissions for yourself. If the Norton cd still won't work, a couple of options, the last two being your best bets.
    1. Email Symantec (Christer, no laughing!)
    2. Try an sfc (System File Check) (wild chance it might work)
    3. Use a restore point to go back before the uninstall (desperate)
    4. Do back ups and reinstall XP
    5. Give up in disgust and try another product

    Johanna,
thanks for the info, I'll try emailing the symantec folks....which I'm sure that for a nominal fee (29.95), they will be more than happy to help me! I will also try the system file check. I do have a question about the other suggestion on backing up and re-installing XP. Should I just do a full system back-up or partial? Also, what do you suggest is the best way to wipe everything before attempting the re-install? I would hate to make the wrong choice and have this really cool $750.00 Blender left over!!

    again, I appreciate your help...
