Are any of you familiar with this program?

I linked up to a relative's PC 600 miles away to do necessary updates, and I found this program installed on their laptop (it wasn't there back in November). I'm wondering if it came bundled with HP printer software that was recently installed.

I used Gateway's own update software, but its only suggested driver update was a touchpad driver.

Hi James. That Driver Manager program is garbage. In the top left corner, see how it has a register button? That shows that you need to pay a fee to even have the program show you what drivers are out of date. Even then I'll bet that it will try to scare you into thinking that your computer has bad corrupted drivers when the machine is working fine.

Programs like that are not worth your time and you should remove them as soon as possible. It was probably installed by the user clicking on a random popup or an Internet advertisement so its not a legit piece of software at all.

Thanks, Evan. I figured as much, but I was a little confused at the time because my relative has a Norton antivirus subscription - which is about to expire in less than two months. Her son-in-law talked her into buying Norton last year, so I am unsure if she plans to keep using it or trying something else like Windows Defender (she has Windows 8.1), or Avast.

I'll link up to her computer, soon, and remove Drive Manager.

Is it Norton 360 Premier. I never download Norton 360 Premier. I buy the disk. They add extras during the download process.

So, this (Drive Manager) software *is* package together with Norton 360?

Norton came preinstalled (I think) on her laptop, and she purchased a license for Norton about a year ago. I have worked on this computer, in person and remotely, several times, but this is the first time I ever saw Drive Manager installed on it.

I think it's more likely as Evan suggested. Control Panel > Programs & Features > that's where you'll find the oddball entry > uninstall!

Norton will be the bundle with Driver Manager as Evan said. You would click to install Norton with the Driver Manager rubbish. Neil.

If your relative is up for it then you should also uninstall Norton and replace it with either Avast or turn on Windows Defender which is Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows 8.1.

Does Norton need any special uninstall tool? I know at one time, Norton used to be a pain to remove as it would spider itself deep into the registry.

You should uninstall it via Control Panel< Uninstall a program.

Then when its been uninstalled run the Norton Removal Tool to remove any remnants that have been left behind.

The over-use of the 'partnered with Norton' badge also seems highly suspect to me...

Yeah, that should have caught my eye sooner, but I was bewildered when I saw that icon on my relative's laptop. I can't imagine that software being bundled with an HP printer driver, and I know I did not install it (Driver Manager) the last time I did remote assistance.

My relative did say that her son-in-law had to call HP support to get printer software installed. Driver Manager must have been inadvertently installed somewhere during that process.

Ah! Well if that is the case, is it not plausible that he looked around on the internet first, and read something about drivers, (which makes sense since we are talking about printers here) so then searched online for some 'driver repair' software, and installed this Cr@pware. Which, of course, did nothing, so he resolved to just call HP Support instead?

I've yet to do a remote connection, Evan, but I hope to do one soon.

    Very possible.

I know his mother-in-law said it took an hour, with HP support, to get the driver installed. I'm short on specifics, but the driver that came with the printer *might* have been incompatible with Windows 8.1. Maybe that's why they called HP.

I removed Driver Manager tonight, but my relative is going to renew her subscription to Norton for one more year. Is it best to renew from within Norton, or buy a new disk?

I don't know since I've never used Norton. Maybe someone else can provide input on the procedure.
