I have Norton AV, and it will not boot, and I cannot update . I get an error message, cannot locate NAVAPSVC.EXE. I have tried to log onto Symantec, but keep getting the message, server not available. When I search the web for this file, I have found that NAVAPSVC.EXE is required to start Norton AV. As I cannot log into Symantec, where else can I download this file from, and has a virus caused this file to be deleted.

If you can't log onto Symantecs site, its likely you have a virus/worm that is preventing this.

Try using an online scan from one of the sites mentioned in this sites Recommended Links

    Arie,
Many thanks for your response. I thought that it may be a virus causing the problem. I have attempted to log onto Symantec and Microsoft, No luck with Symantec, and I can only get to the Microsoft Homepage. When I attempt to get into support, I get the Server not available message.

I am currently running Trend Micro House Call , and it has already found 4 viruses, but it is still scanning. With this virus, would it get into the Recovery Consul log, and if so , would it be wise to disable the consul, and clear the consul log. And if you think I should do this, how do I do it. Many thanks.

    Regards

    I have a question.

Was this a new install of Norton or had it been on the system ?

If it was a new install I can see where a problem could exist.

But IF it was on previously, I would surely be doing some checking on things.

    BillyBob,
This is an old install of Systemworks 2002. I have kept up with all updates since then. This problem only arose about 2 days ago, when i started having problems logging onto sites. this is when I noticed a red X on the NAV symbol in the tray. If I attempt to enable it, or do Live Update, I get the error message " Cannot locate navapsvc.exe ". I have now been running Trend Micro House Call for 4 hours, and it still has not finished, but my connection speed is very slow. I do have another system with NAV, SPYBOT and Spy Sweeper on it, so if this Micro House Call takes much longer, I will shut it down, and shift the HD to the other system, and do scan on it as D drive.

    Regards

    TO the Moderators.

I believe this post should be on one of the Virus forums

This is why I asked. What went wrong with the setup if NAV that allowed the Viruses in ?

Is it possible that one ( or more ) of the Viruses disabled Norton ?

Are you cautious about clicking on Links that are contained in E-MAIL ?

Wait for a more porfessional answer, but I would say YES to cleaning up the recovery console.

Every time that I do any cleanup work or add/remove things, I make sure any old Restore points ( in XP ) and the RB000x.cab files in 98 are replaced with new ones.

I Would suggest you do what you need to do to replace the Recovery Consul because the way I understand it a Virus cleaner may not clean them out.

    BillyBob,
Well i found the culprit. After waiting 5 hours for Micro House Call to complete the scan, I got sick of waiting. I removed the HD, and set it up in my other system. There I ran NAV , SpyBot and Spy Sweeper, and found that I had 4 infections of Trojan. TOOSO.H. I checked NAV, and found that the name on the file NAVAPSVC.EXE had been changed to NAVIPSVC.EXE. So I copied NAVAPSVC.EXE fron my second system, and pasted it into faulty one. I can now open NAV, but it will not allow me to run Live Update. I will re install it, and see how it goes. I have no idea how the troojan got into my system, as I am always very carefull about which attachments I open. If I don't know the sender, I delete them. Many thanks for all your help Billy Bob and Arie, and I will let you know if I get it all sorted out.

    Regards

    Graham

    Great work.

I would suggest that you do your best to make sure the NORTON is COMPLETELY removed and another virus/Trojan check run before re-installing Norton.

And again I would also suggest that you remove and replace any and all backups. Just to be sure they are clean.

BTW As to my suggestion about E-Mail. You would be surprised at how many FAMILY members have told me that I was NUTS for worrying about E-Mail.

Being asked to take someone shopping. Will be back later.

    BillyBob,
Well I have just returned from a days fishing, and attempted to un install NAV. I ran un install from the Norton file, and all that happened was that Un Install - un installed itself, but left NAV on the machine. When I try WINDOWS un install, NAV does not appear in the list of installed software, yet it is still shown in the programe file, and the icon is still in the tray. i think I will go fishing again, I had better luck there.

How do I un install NAV now, and how do I access the restore point to delete the restore log. Sorry to hang all this on you, I am more into the electronics side of PC's than the software side.

the Live Update issue is likely caused by some spyware messing with your Hosts file and registry entries for Live Update.

Suggest cleaning all spyware and then reinstalling NAV.

    BillyBob, TonyT,
I have already cleaned out the host file, which allowed me to log into Symantec. I have downloaded and run the trojan removal tool. Now all I have to do is shut down System Restore, manually remove NAV, and do a clean install. Many thanks.

    Arie,
Many thanks for all your help.

    BillyBob,
Again, many thanks for all your help , hope you had a good day shopping.

    Coolwaters,
I would love to know how the trojan got intyo my system, I always have anti virus running, and up to date with definitions. I delete attachments from people I do not know. But most annoying of all, how did the trojan get past the running virus software. ?????. Thanks for you input, so who's av software can you trust to do the job.

    Regards

Some newer "trojans" get onto a computer via a webpage that exploits vulerabilities in the browser, or they come from spyware that then downloads other components such as other trojans, **** phone dialers, etc etc. And by the time the antivirus pgm has the new updated definitions it's too late, the trojan has disabled the av pgm!

    Tony,
Many thanks for your help. I do visit a lot of sites, both commercial and private, looking for components, information, data, and the like, so there is a chance that is where I have picked it up. A bit of Islamic law would not go astray here. When they catch the wally's who write this stuff, chop the fingers off. Forget their civil rights, these guys need to be stopped, and that is one sure way of stopping them. Best I stay off the Granny sites from now as well !. Cheers.

    Regards
