Norton Antivirus Update

I recently updated NAV 2003 through auto update. I was asked to restart my Computer. When I did I got a black screen with the repeating message, unable to update file 1% to 2%. Nothing I could do to stop this repeating message. I had to to cut the power and boot from the rescue disk. I have since then did only the Virus definitions update and nothing else that may require a restart. Any one out there can help me with this problem. Thanks in advance
