I just finished installing NAV Professional 2004. I was surprised to read in the manual that it does not support POP3s with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and in the additional notes included on the CD, we have this statement:

Supported Ports for Norton AntiVirus's email protection
    ---------------------------------------------------
Norton AntiVirus only supports email scanning on the default
ports of 110 (POP3) & 25 (SMTP). Currently, we do not provide
Email protection for any other ports.
    ----------------------------------------------------------
Now on my Mozilla setup, I have SSL on incoming mail and I am using port 995 through a DSL line setup.
On the outgoing mail I am not using SSL and am using port 25

So my question is this: Is NAV doing anything about checking my incoming mail?
I normally don't use NAV for the outgoing mail.

    Hi ackerberg,

If Norton AntiVirus only supports email scanning on the default ports of 110 (POP3), and doesn't provide Email protection for any other incoming ports, then I would say that your incoming mail isn't being scanned, as you use Port 995, with SSL.

    According to the Mozilla FAQ:

3.7. Is Mozilla Mail & Newsgroup susceptible to e-mail viruses?

Mozilla Mail & Newsgroup will not allow a virus or worm to execute automatically. You can see what attachments have been sent to you without a virus being able to execute, and you would have to save a file to your system and deliberately run it before it could cause any harm.

JavaScript is switched off by default for mail and news, so an e-mail cannot run script code just by being opened.

As with any mail program, take proper caution before running any file that you receive in e-mail. Appropriate anti-virus software should also help keep you safer.

See the supplementary tutorial on Junk Mail Control for more details.

I have NAV 2003 installed, and have never used the email scanning feature, for Netscape, Mozilla, or Communicator.

You might want to take a look at these NAV 2003/2004 FAQ:
FAQ - Norton AntiVirus Email Scanning

Send Symantic an Email if you are still insecure about scanning incoming Mail. Since your software is new, you may be allowed a free call to them...
