    Hello all!

Today, a friend asked me for help with his new LapTop (Dell something with Vista Home Basic). It had a three months trial version of Norton Internet Security 2007 but my friend had bought a full version of Norton AntiVirus 2008. I don't know what my friend did to uninstall NIS 2007 (and neither does he) but it was still there with nothing in the programs listing or add/remove (or what it's called in Vista). He could not install NAV 2008 without uninstalling the previous version which he couldn't.

Anyway, I let "Norton Removal Tool" loose on the LapTop and after that, NAV 2008 was successfully installed. Now to my question:

The Windows FireWall was disabled and I don't know if that setting was a left-over from the NIS 2007 installation. The Security Center was happy either way and showed a green check mark for NAV 2008 as an active FireWall. I had a quick look into NAV 2008 and it seems to have some "kind of" FireWall function.

Should the Windows FireWall be running in parallel with NAV 2008 or not?

    Thanks for your time,
    Christer

NAV 2008 AV is just that... an anti-virus program without a firewall. Therefore, you should either activate the Windows firewall or better yet, get a free one: i.e. Sunbelt Firewall, Comodo, Zone Alarm Free.

    James,
I agree with you but it wasn't my decision. If my friend (the owner of the LapTop) had asked for my advice in advance, I would have recommended NIS (or any other well reputed "package "). I asked my friend why he bought NAV rather than NIS and the answer was the price. He paid SEK 349 ($49) for NAV 2008 but I would have recommended NIS 2007 since I know it is on sale in one of my local shops at SEK 299 ($43) ... :p ... !

I still wonder why the Security Center shows a green check mark with the Windows FireWall turned off ... ... but maybe I know too little about Vista. This was my first contact with that critter!

Norton AntiVirus 2008 and Windows Firewall

    Hi Christer,

As James had stated in his post, the Norton AntiVirus 2008 package does Not contain a Firewall. The 2008 product does however contain Anti-spyware functionality.

Norton Internet Security 2008 and Norton 360 both contain firewall functionality and the installation of these products will turn the Windows Firewall setting off in Windows XP and Windows Vista.

You did install Norton AntiVirus 2008 correctly by first using the Norton Removal Tool prior to installing Norton AntiVirus 2008. This ensures that you are performing a true "clean" installation.

In regards to the Windows Security Center, the Firewall should be turned on for protection. I can not comment on the use of products other than the Norton products I support. As to "why" the icon is green and you are saying that the Firewall is turned off, the only suggestion I can give you is to bring up the Security Center by double-clicking on the icon in the system tray and see what it says in regards to on/off status.

I hope this answers your question.

    Thank you,
    Mike

    Hi Mike!

Thanks for your comments. I'll check the settings the next time the path of that computer is crossing mine. (As I remember it, I was in doubt and played it safe by setting the Windows FireWall to ON.)
