hey folks, i have a windows 98 machine, with norton antivirus (2002). I am also using outlook express 6. If I have norton set to scan email under the options button, then i am unable to receive email. If i uncheck those boxes (there's 2 of 'em), then i can receive email.

Has anyone ran across this problem yet?

I went to the Symantec Website but nothing posted with this problem.

Any suggestions would be sincerely appreciated.

    Thanks
    Dave

I just did a search at Symantec (got lucky...maybe?) and found THIS link and possible solution for your problem. I have been told by a few ISP tech people that, for some reason, some virus checkers don't like to be directly hooked up to your mail for checking purposes. Just check out the link and let us know if this worked for you, or not. Your virus checker can still check your mail without actually going through it's home base. Norton is just so picky with this. LOL. But, I still prefer Norton over any other virus checker.

    Good luck.

    :)

I don't use NAV2002 but I did a lot of reading up on it before I installed it on my sister's WinMe machine! She couldn't use the mail protection feature because she uses AOL but I did find out that AutoProtect will still keep you virus-free, even with e-mail protection turned off. The mail scanning feature is just an added layer of protection.

There seems to be a problem with Symantec's site and I can't get to Panda's link  so I did some checking at Ask Symantec Online (NAV2002 Win9x) to see if I could find anything. There were too many posts to check without knowing more about your problem:

It would help if I knew the details of any error message you get when you try to receive mail with email protection turned on.

RATS! I couldn't get to my link, either. Then, when I tried to do another search, it lagged. It must be the site. Anyway, it would seem you are right, Daizy, about the mail still being protected when the actual scan feature is disabled. Here is a quote from one of their help pages on disabling NAV:

Even though email scanning is disabled, your computer is still protected from viruses. NAV Auto-Protect will scan email attachments when you save the attachment to the hard drive. After you disable NAV's email scanner, be sure that Auto-Protect is enabled, and then run LiveUpdate regularly to make sure that Auto-Protect has been optimally configured. Auto-Protect provides real-time virus protection from any source, including the Internet, and will automatically scan email attachments whenever they are accessed.

Just in case you don't have the instructions on how to enable or disable NAV (2002 & 2003), here they are:

To enable email scanning in NAV:

    1. Exit any running email programs.
    2. Start Norton AntiVirus.
    3. Click Options.
    4. Click Email under the Internet section.
    5. Check Scan incoming Email and Scan outgoing Email.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Close Norton AntiVirus.

To disable email scanning in NAV:
    1. Exit any running email programs.
    2. Start Norton AntiVirus.
    3. Click Options.
    4. Click Email under the Internet section.
    5. Uncheck Scan incoming Email and Scan outgoing Email.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Close Norton AntiVirus.

Please holler back and let us know if any of this worked for you. OK?

    Good luck.

    :)
