    Hello!

I have just started using Norton. About 85% of the time, when I turn on the computer, my internet connection pops up. It takes several clicks on "cancel" to get it to go away. This just started since Norton was installed. I've checked my settings - it recommends "start Auto Protect when windows starts up," however, this should not mean to connect, should it? This is so aggravating as Internet Connect pops up even when I'm doing other things like word processing. Is this a Norton problem?

    Thanks,
    Karen

Probably trying to auto-update. Make sure virus definitions are up-to-date by manually checking for updates.

I agree with Dave, it is probably trying to update itself. Make sure that Live Update is not set to automatically check for updates.

    Hello Karen,

You can keep Norton's auto update feature and keep it from trying to dial out when no connection by:

Go into IE options > connections tab > check "Never dial a connection "

AV autoupdate is the only autoupdate I allow to run. Don't disable it, schedule it.

    Dave,

How do you do that w/ Norton?

AFAIK, Norton has a LU .exe that wants to access the net to look for, not subject to "scheduling ".

If you mean thru Task Schedular, great idea - never seen it mentioned by anyone else.

I disabled it, Symantec doesn't do that many per week anyway.

    Regards - Charles

I suppose with task scheduler would work too. Didn't actually think of that. I wasn't aware NAV didn't have that option. I would think NAV's help section would tell. I use eTrust and it does. :)

When you install NAV it sets up a schedule in Task Scheduler for Live Update by default - Symantec NetDetect.

Pete: your post set off my revisting that NAV Redirector of May 12 issue – new startup SNDMon.exe (Symantec NetDriver Monitor).

Looked in TS - sure 'nuff, this is what I found: \Program file\Symantec\LiveUpdate\NDETECT.EXE"

All that time and aggravation spent in trying to find out what Symantec was up to, and it turns out to be updating the LiveUpdate to give the older version(s) - how about NAV2003? - the ability to schedule LU.

    Regards - Charles

I'm running NAV 2004 - all Liveupdate files are dated June 2003

Nav 2003 is installed on the laptop and updates virus defs as and when I happen to be on line.

I'm fairly sure 2002 did as well, but that is sometime ago :)

Pete, the new default option in Task Schedular would check for updates "starting at 12.05 AM for 24 hours every day, starting 05/14/2004 ". That's the first line.

There is a number two which is to start looking at log in.

    From the LU help file:
I don't know if this help entry was updated as well or this is what it originally looked like.

    Regards - Charles
