i posed your question to symantec's customer service department and received this excerpted response.....

"Please accept my apology that at this time, Norton AntiVirus 2003 is not available as a 30-day trial version.

As an alternative, you can purchase Norton AntiVirus 2003 on an evaluation basis and utilize Symantec's 60-day money back guarantee if you are not satisfied. For information on returning Symantec products please navigate to the following URL: "

    http://www.symantec.com/custserv/cs_returns.html

    hope this helps

I may not be completely correct in my thinking here, but I believe Symantec and others have stopped the trial versions. Because some of them were not working correctly.

I have downloaded trial versions before and they did not seem to work correctly.

Plus sometimes ( but not always ) a trial version may be an older or incomplete version.

I think it to be much better to have the return and get your money back. That way you do get the full unaltered version.

I think it is much better for both the user and Symantec.

Anti-Virus and Firewall software is sure not a place to cut corners OR COSTS. Others things might be OK. But not those two.

In fact cutting the cost here may well GREATLY increase costs.

i've been fortunate enough recently to have the best of both worlds, so to speak.

i always purchase symantec software in the shrink wrapped box. i have been buying norton systemworks for at least 3 years now, and thus get norton antivirus as a component of systemworks.

but the cool part is that i have been able to get the boxed version for free by taking advantage of upgrade rebates and retailer rebates at staples.

about six months ago i paid $50 each for norton systemworks 2002 and norton internet security 2002, and each product had a $30 upgrader rebate and $20 staple rebate offer. which means each product was free. these were standard, full versions. the professional version of systemworks includes ghost, which i do not need since i use drive image.

i have come to find norton internet security to be a bit more of a problem performance-wise than it is worth, but i don't mind uninstalling software that cost me nothing!

systemworks is a product that has undoubtedly enhanced my computing experience. it's a fine utility suite, imo, and i have come to rely upon it to keep my machines running well.

and of course, norton antivirus is, by almost everyone's standards, the industry leader in virus protection.

and who can argue with free?

just wanted to kick in my few cents....

    :)

    Different eggs and different baskets.

That is a way of getting it free. ( or darn close to ) But not the way I was referring to.

If I am thinking and understanding correctly you paid first, and then got you money back in one way or another. That is fine if done that way. ( I do that too ) But you also wind up with the " shrink wrapped box full Retail version.

But what I was referring to is downloading free for trial versions from the Symantec site itself. I have NEVER had good luck with them. They always seem to be missing something. And they are usually not updateable. For me, that alone is three strikes against a trial version.

Also with some trial versions there is no help available.

I myself use Norton Internet Security 2001 ( both AV & Firewall )on one machine. NAV 2002 & Norton Personal Firewall on another. And now NAV 2003 and Norton Internet security on this one. And Live update seems to keep them all updated very nicely. Both software and deffinitions.

But this machine is the one that is on-line the most and needs most protection.

But one problem that I have run into with some family members and Friends is that they install NAV and then DO NOT let it go online to get updated. Then they wonder why they get hit with a month old ( or older ) Virus. But you cna not blame Symantec for that as it does very clearly tell you during the install to do that.

same eggs and same basket, billy bob.

i was clear on what you were saying about trialware vs. "the full unaltered version ".

i merely posted to say that i had the "the best of both worlds "....

    free AND full retail.

so your point was not disagreed with, nor missed.

it was taken, and then added to.

I hope you realize that these are just my thoughts and nothing else.

I do agree that you wind up with the best of two worlds. And I do also at times.

Although I do think that a shrink wrapped retail box ( basket ) has a differrent egg ( white ) in it than a download ( basket ) containing a trial version. ( brown )

The white egg should be edible and tasty. But depending on the individual system and user preferences, it can be yucky also.

The brown egg may be a little questionable right out of the hen. ( off the server ) They are not supposed to be but I have gotten some bad ones. But that can depend on the individual system also.

So I guess it boils down to the fact of who is tasting the eggs. And whether they like the flavor or not.

Some like White eggs and some like Brown. :) I like White and scrambled. :)

But with either egg it must have the proper preparation to be tasty. The installation of either has a lot to do with the final taste. Which goes of course with any software not just NAV.
