Ok, so here's the thing... I just upgraded my Norton 2000 to their System Works 2003. During the initial setup there was this obsure notice about "Unconfigure your E-Mail Clients" (!?). Anyway, I went on with the install. Great. It immediately updated my anti-virus software and included the new one, too. (Cool!) Guess what? R-i-g-h-t... No E-Mail. I at least had the presence of mind to print out the "How To ", but it doesn't work!

I go to IE; Tools; Accounts; Properties; Servers. B-4 I entered the "New" info it read as follows; The Incoming (POP3), the Ourgoing (STMP) AND the Account Name were ALL THE SAME (miracle@sitestar.net) Everything worked fine b-4 the install.

Norton's sheet says to change the POP3 address to 127.0.0.1 and leave all the rest alone. According to the sheet, these are the correct settings "with protection ". I was to leave them alone for settings "without protection ". (!?) Anyway, they don't work either way. Even when I change 'em back to the original settings I can't e-mail. And, of course, my cable provider's not available for tech-support 'til Monday, and Norton has no 80 #'s. ANYONE?

Since my e-mail's down, I can't get the notice if any of you folks answer, so I'll just check back every hour or so. Thanx...

Norton's sheet says to change the POP3 address to 127.0.0.1

    ?????????

I think that went out several versions ago.

I have had 2002 & 2003 and neither one had 127.0.0.1 in the POP server line.

I just check my e-mail programs ( Eudora ) that are using NAV and they all have the POP3 address the POP of the mail server.

I am also slowing sending Symantec Products into never-never land anyway.

AVG ( AV ) & Kerio ( Firewall ) do just as well with far less problems and system load.

Did you COMPLETELY remove ALL Norton Products before upgrading ?

    OH NO !!!

What you may need to do now.

1--and VERY important Open the Recycle Bin Properties and select remove Norton Protection. Make sure to select remove protected files Restart Windows.

2-- Use the Un-install and let it remove all it can of Norton.

3--Do a MANUAL regedit and remvoes every thing you cna find in regards to Symantec and/or Norton.

4-- Delete every folder relating to Symantec or Norton.

5-- Defrag the drive and restart Windows.

6--Try another install and do a Custom install and select only the parts you want to install.

    Good Luck

OK. Done. My Lord, but it was imbedded. There was Norton stuff EVERYWHERE. I think I got it all. I just did a defrag yesterday. Do I need to do another before I reboot & re-install? (It takes so-o-o-o long...)

Also, get RegCleaner and after you have followed BB's post instructions through step 4, run regCleaner and take out all the Symantic and or Norton references that it finds. Don't forget to remove live Update and the Symantec folders that are in common files. Then go on to BB 5 & beyond.

I never heard of setting 127.0.0.1 for email either. Configure your POP3 and SMTP ports normally (25 &110) before you do your install and Norton will reassign what it wants to.

Good Luck - you have that really sick feeling for good reason -

    ;)

Hehehe ............... (do I really have to take a bath Mom? I just took one this morning)

If it were me, I'd install and then run Speed Disk but I'm not your mother.

    Question

Why dies defrag take so long. ?

    My thoughts.

    A LARGE Size partition.

    TaskMonitor loading at start up.

May still be using Win98 Defrag.

    My Suggestions.

Next time you build a system keep the C: drive to a minimum required for the OS and associated programs. This help to preserve a lot of programs and data if the C: drive does need formating.

Set the Swap file to a fixed Minimum size. And if possible put it on another partition. Then let SpeedDisk put it at the front of the partition. This helps a little in speed and keeps the fragmentation of C: down considerably.

Shut down TaskMonitor which really does noting other than overwork Defrag.

Empty the C:\Windows Applog folder. No need to delete the folder cause Window may but it right back. Notron Speed Disk can work just like the Taskmonitor/Apllog combo and re-arranges thiings every time you defrag.

I believe that Windows ME defrag can still be had form somewhere. If you can get it, replace both 98 defrag and Speed Diskwith it.

As to defrag itself. Use either Windows Defrag or SpeedDisk. Not both. They do things quite differently.

While I was still using 98SE My C: drive only took about 30
seconds to defrag. Of course it only had about 1.4 gig of stuff on it. I did not bother with the other partitions unless I had made major add or removals.

And last but not least and from a LONO, LONG time dupporter of Norton. DUMP it an go for better ( or at least as good ) cheaper with far less system load.
