[Inactive] Non-standard or infected MBR. Infected Reg Items

I'd appreciate some help cleaning up an XP-Home Drive that my wife uses and, as I have discovered, the grandkids get their hands on it when they come to overnite.

I’ve managed to fix a number of issues, but Windows is not my "˜thing’, and I’d appreciate having someone with savvy have a look and make suggestions.

My first concern appears in the MBR where it says: "Found non-standard or infected MBRâ€. I ran the Rx to fix it a number of times, but the alert reappears on reboots/rescan.

Malwarebytes’ also indicates 2 Registry Items to be Infected.

Below are copies what y'all request.

Regards,
rooster1

That's better :)

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

• Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
• Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
• Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
• Click OK.
• Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
• Save the report to your Desktop.
• Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay? ".

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
2. Close any open browsers.
3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
• Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
• Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
• Close any open browsers.
• WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
• Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
• If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG users: ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results ". Since AVG cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG first.
Use AppRemover to uninstall it: http://www.appremover.com/
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion ", restart computer to fix the issue.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:
1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode.
2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to your_name.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr
Rkill.exe
• Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
• If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
• A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
• If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
• If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
• Do not reboot until instructed.
• If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.
In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.
DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!
1) I’d prefer to not unistall AVG. Would doing what AVG suggests be OK instead?
http://www.avg.com/ww-en/faq?num=3857
2) I’ve looked over the regime for running the eMachines OEM Recovery Console! It looks like a PITA I’d rather not undertake. If Combofix takes me in that direction, I’ll need to gain a sense of whether or not any infection(s) I might have are destructive enough to justify the Rx.
I don’t have any mail clients on the XP drive. This suggests to me the only concern I need have involve performance issues. AFAIKT, XP is fast enough and the redirects I’m seeing are pretty much indistinguishable from what might be considered inevitable.
From what I’ve posted thus far, are there clues to how exposed the unit is to malevolence or crashing?
Unfortunately, there is no other way to run Combofix, but only when AVG is completely uninstalled.
I can't answer your last question without running all necessary checks.
Broni;
OK. I'll go with the AVG uninstall. But if ComboFix insists on going the Recovery Console route, I'll have to drop out of the Program. As best as I can determin, the time and risks involved in doing that aren't worth it.
Be back tomorrow if time allows.
Ragards,
rws
Installing Recovery Console is a must.
It's a very important troubleshooting tool, which should be present on every computer.
You don't have to do anything.
It's your computer afterall.
OK. Before I proceed, I’m going to back-up the missus’ Documents and Favorites to DVD (or CD … I can’t seem to find/access the DVD “D drive” setting in XP !).
I want her to review what to back-up and that won’t happen until tonite … if I can get her to participate that is. I’m just under orders to ‘fix it and don’t bother me with the details’… If you’re married you know what I mean.
Your advice is sage, concise and much appreciated. But here’s the thing. The eMachines OEM Windows XP-Home Edit did not come with what you correctly define as a “Recovery Console”... (just in case you didn't know). This unit came with what they call a “T2893 Restore DVD”.
From my past ‘recherchés’ I’ve learned to my utter amazement, the “Recovery Console” is not included on that disk; which is part & parcel of the normal retail distribution. The “Restore DVD” wipes the existing XP installation clean and installs a virgin copy. Given that, and the fact that MS’s support for XP is waning, I have to decide whether the time and risks involved in pursuing a fix for something I can’t evaluate is the smart thing to do. Or, whether it would make better sense to backup and let things be, upgrade to Vista, or migrate her to a Linux distro. That decision is really going to be up to her.
I appreciate your time and trouble and shall get back to let you know how things unfold.
Regards,
rooster
Proper backup should be always in place, so you're doing a smart thing.
Your data should be backed up, no matter of the computer health.
**** happens.
Riiight.
You and I know this. But, for the sake of users like my mussus, it might be worth considering including a reminder in the preamble; "Read this topic... "
Eh?
Broni;
I finally got her attention and went over the problems and options. She supplied the appropriate number of ahha’s and hmm-hmms to let me know she was listening. Zeroing in on the real issue and stripping away all irrelevancies she said; “I think it’s time we changed the curtains in here. If you’ll bring the groceries in from the car, I’ll start supper.â€
That’s wife-speak for: “Frankly, "¦. I don’t give a damnâ€. I’m going to back-up and see if anything untoward happens.
My compliments to this site and it's contributors. I used the protocol as a guide to fix a number of things myself and I learned a lot in the process.
Many thanks,
rooster
