Okay, here is the dope. I have several questions. Bear with me, please.

Windoze Server 03 se with XP and 2000 workstations.

We have this scanner: DR-3080CII http://www.usa.canon.com/opd/controller?act=OPDSoftwareAct&fcategoryid=2341&modelid=10320 . This is a scanner, as I understand it, does not have networking capabilties. This is the first time I have ever worked with scanners outside the home. Is there a way to turn it into a networked scanner?

We have two users with two different programs that need to use this same scanner. Buying a new one is NOT an option.

I was thinking of setting up some kind of "scanner workstation" for a lack
of my terms. A workstation sitting on the network has the scanner hooked up
to it. This would allow both users to use the one workstation w/ scanner without unplugging, lugging, and replugging into their workstation- by physically going to it.

The one program uploads to a site which makes it easy. The second uses a database to save information instead of individual files. Everytime the program closes, it gives the user the ability to save a backup database. This backup can easily be used by the user. Is there any program or batch file that can be used to "sense" or be utilized to transfer this file easily and expediently?

I was personally thinking the batch file option would be the easiest option.

    Thank you in advance!!!

OK, I'm probably missing something here...

You could set up a remote control desktop if you were willing to commit one system for the scanner but here's where I'm confused. Presumably your two users would have to go to the scanner to place the documents to scan. Since they have to do that anyway why not just have them use the system that the scanner's connected to?

Its a big mess. The one program ( which saves to the datebase ) requires a whole list of things to do.

Reasons program cannot just be installed on workstation w/ scanner.

1> I would have to uninstall SQL 05, install software, reinstall sql, and so forth. This is time that these users cannot spare. Nor can I come in early enough to do it or stay late enough to do this. More than 10 minutes of me messing with the computer can set the user and company back significantly.

2> Just having it on the one computer would require the one user to stop doing what they do. Which again, is a major problem unfortunately.

3> Lastly, the user needs to be able to work with the files at their own workstation due to other tasks and programs/ sites. There is just too many programs and websites that this company uses to make it work on just one workstation.

Let me know, if I did not answer anything....

This is the life of the IT dept. If it's that critical to the company make time.

But surely they have to do that anyway to place the documents in the scanner?

Seriously if it's that critical, buy another scanner and use both workstations (what would you do if your scanner broke down?)

Again I'll say I'm probably missing something but from your posts it appears that you're making a mountain from a molehill.

I understand and agree with what you are saying. However, my boss is looking at cost issues and will not make an exception. I have to work with what I have and nothing more.

Fair enough, it's on your boss's head then. I will point out networked or not only one person can use the scanner at a time so someone would have to stop what they're doing if the other is using it.

As a sidenote I'd probably be looking for a new job now before the **** hits the fan ;)

lol I'm always on the outlook for the better job.

I think he just does not understand computers enough to understand the ordeal. I think hes looking at it with a "plug and play" mentality and thinks I am just jerking his chain for something "new. "
