I have a desktop and Liksys router at home and never was unable to connect by laptop, until today. It has worked for past 4 years. The only thing I can think of was there was a microsoft automatic download, mostly for security for XP and IE8 to the laptop just before I noticed there was no signal. I do not have a secure wireless for the router. Any thoughts on what I might do to trace my problem? At the same time I was having some power related problem and found I need a new battery for the 4 year old laptop. The linksys connection is also not available where you connect to it and view wireless connections.

Something I find which has often worked is to go to Device Manager and uninstall all the devices under Network Adapters. They should be automatically reinstalled when you reboot, although you might want to be aware of where your drivers disk is (although, if drivers are required to be installed it means the previous drivers were incorrect).

Thank you Matt, I just found what I am totally embarassed about not catching. There is a wireless button that turns it on and off and I must have unknowingly turned it off. Just turning it on corrected the problem. I did go to HP diagnostics and used some diagnostic tools which I think sent me in the correct direction. So, case closed.
