Hi all, I am really stumped by this one:

I recently purchased a new motherboard (ASUS P4S8x-MX) with onboard video for my V2 Premier PC.

When I turn on the computer, the PC will run its POST and I press "any key" to start the formatting of the Hard drive to install XP.

After I press any key to boot to CD, it will say "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration" with a black background.

Right after it says that, the screen goes completely black, but the green light stays on the monitor, and doesnt turn orange.

That is far as I get. I have checked the BIOS settings and it's set to "onboard AGP" like it should be. I have tried a working PCI card and get the same result. I have no PCI cards at all in the motherboard. I have a Samsung hard drive as the primary master and a CD-RW as the secondary master and DVD ROM as the secondary slave.

I have had real good luck with this motherboard because I have used this model to build 4 new computers, but for whatever reason, it will not work in my used V2 Premier computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried to press "Num Lock" key to see if the "Num Lock" light works after you got black screen?

If the "Num Lock" won't respone while you press the "Num lock" key, it probably means your computer is death right after it reads the XP CD.

Can you try to put the XP CD to your DVD-ROM?( I assume you put XP CD in your CD-RW.)

It could be a problem with the XP CD - however I have moved your thread to the Hardware forum which I think is more appropriate at this stage.

thanks for your help guys. I know the lights work on the keyboard because I hit CTRL ALT DELETE and it does restart the computer.

Should I try another XP CD? Should I change the DVD to be the secondary master to boot from and put the CD-RW as the secondary slave?

    Thanks again for your help!

Try another CD if you have one - for test purposes as you can only install/activate on one computer from one CD and try the other drive - with both CD's.

Changing the opticals around is unlikely to help, but anything is worth trying :)

    Disconnect any added hardware.

If you have two (or more) sticks of RAM, just use one. You can run the memory diagnostics in my signature. Edit: Could be when Windows loads into the "upper memory" (base memory is 640Kb).

If you have set "Optimum Settings" in the BIOS, change back to "Setup Defaults" and you could try the other way round. It may be a resource problem.

Try disabling any built-in hardware like Audio or LAN.

I only have 1 stick of memory and that was working. I will try the memory diagnostics tomorrow along with trying to disable onboard onboard audio and LAN.

I also did try Setup Defaults in the BIOS and even reset the CMOS with the jumper. But anyways, I do thank you all for your suggestions.
