No URL sent to IE while clicking on embed' link

IE 5.5 under WinME, both updated.

If I click on a hyperlink embedded in a document
- IE opens without the corresponding URL in the URL window
- IE opens a blank page (the home page is set to be something else)
- The window just holds about four blank spaces
- Typing or pasting the URL manually leads to successful navigation
- The resulting instance of IE is otherwise perfectly formed.

Any hints?
