    Trying to bring up computer so that we can back it up ( or download whats on it in our files so that we can reload windows 98se to replace some of the missing dll files and also an error that reads Himem.sys not found.
    Have had suggestions from some but can't seem to get the system to boot up where we get the tool bar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I think I would do an overlay install of Windows. Instructions, as given to me once not so long ago here, which went well considereing I had dumped alot of important files. See the 2nd post on that page, after all the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx's

    In that situation, are you using a bootdisk?

    Try copying himem.sys off a win98 bootdisk. If you don't have one you can download one here . After you download it, put a floppy disk in the a: drive and then double click on the file you downloaded. Once it's done making the disk put it in the a: drive of the puter that's giving you problems and then start the computer. When it stops at the a: prompt type the following line and then press enter.

    copy himem.sys c:\windows

    Include the spaces in the line. Once it's done, remove the floppy and restart the computer.

    I think we need to clarify a few things and start from the beginning......

    What caused the problem in the first place?

    Any specific error?

    What method are you using in an attempt to start win98 in safemode?

    Do you have a win98 emergency bootdisk?

    Have you done the basics, such as tap F8 key or hold control key [which ever method your computer uses] to get to the bootmenu
    during bootup. Choose c: prompt and from the c prompt run *scandisk
    *scanreg /fix
    *scanreg /opt
    or just plain scanreg /restore to restore a dated registry backup that may predate problem.

    Win98 over_the_top install is a good alternative if safemode is not possible but if errors involve missing files which can be extracted and replaced, this should be considered.

    ============
    Not knowing any of the background details of how you found yourself in this fix [specific errors], what you have tried [and how] so far to fix it and the results of those attempts....makes it kind of hard to come up with suggestions or offer ones that you have not already tried.

    ========
    Also worth noting is that if you have not already disabled the win98 clouds logo screen during bootup it may help to have a look behind the clouds while booting up. Sometimes an error can be reflected here that you aren't aware of. If memory serves me correct, you can temporarily bypass the clouds screen by hitting the "Tab" key. It's worth a shot...

    Your last two comments should be in a 'Posting Tips', as opposed to a 'Posting Rules', and your first mirrors my asking recently "Can you recall when the problem did not exist, if ever? Very often the answer to that is the answer to the problem. "

    BTW, the "win98 clouds logo screenâ€, logo.sys can be disabled with Logo=0 in Msdos.sys. I killed mine within days of getting my machine 4 years ago and its never got a look in since. ;)
