I’ve had this solution for years, since it happened to me. So, if the problem is the same, try it:

Go to Start > Run, type gpedit.msc. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > System Restore and set Turn off System Restore and Turn off Configuration to Disable by right-clicking Properties then Disable.

Right-click on My Computer and Select Manage. Navigate to Services and Applications > Services. Navigate to System Restore Service and double click it. On the General Tab set Startup Type to Automatic using the drop down list. Click the Start button to start the service then close the Computer Management console.

Return to System Restore in Group Policy Editor and configure both to Not Configured. Close Group Policy Editor and reboot the system. After the reboot is complete, right-click My Computer, select Properties and the tab for System Restore will have been restored.

    Repairing System Restore tab

    Burr...

Another new member here. Was just browsing when I found your solution to restoring the System Restore tab.

I had purchased a used computer some time ago, & I had this same problem. I never knew how to fix it until I read your explanation here.

I followed your explicit directions & it worked like a charm. You have made an old man very happy. Thank you, Thank You, Thank You.

Well, my joy was short-lived. True, I got the System Restore Tab back, but System Restore itself does not work.

I click on it & get the hourglass for about 2 seconds. That goes off & absolutely nothing happens. Back to square 1 I guess.

    Thanks anyway.

Hi Pete...Thanx for the welcome & the link for re-installing System Restore.

I followed the directions, but when I right-clicked SR.INF file & clicked INSTALL, I got a pop-up telling me the the file SR.SYS on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed.

I moved recently, & only the Lord Almighty knows where that CD is...I do have it, but will take some searching to find it.

I appreciate your trying to help me. Once I find it, I'll try again & let you how I made out.

    Thanx again...God Bless.

One last time on this subject, at least from me.

In searching for my Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD, Lo & Behold, I found my System DVD that contained not only programs & drivers, but also the complete XP Media Center 2004 O.S.

Since this computer was basically sitting in the closet for 4 years & never hooked to the internet, I didn't have anything to lose by just reinstalling the O.S.

That fixed not only the System Restore problem, but also a secondary problem with Windows Media Player.

So all I can say is Thank you Pete for giving me info to reinstall System Restore. It was in that link I found I needed my SP2 CD. By looking for that, I found my O.S. DVD & fixed my problems.

If only all computer problems would be that easy.

    God Bless.

    Joseph
