One of the first things I noticed when I purchased a new computer, and moved from W95 to WXP, was the sound effect produced when I moved the mouse over the desktop icons. Recently I've noticed that this doesn't happen anymore. I checked Control Panel<Sounds & Audio Devices<Mouse Over- and found that the appropriate sounds were indeed applied to 'Mouse Over' and playing correctly. I'm just wondering why it doesn't function on the desktop? I used EasyClean recently to clean the registry. Might that be the cause? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hello Lugwalker,

*I used EasyClean recently to clean the registry. Might that be the cause?*

To test the theory, do you have System Restore point prior to the use of this Reg cleaner? If so, restore to that point and test.

I don't know anything about this particular cleaner, but as a rule, programs like this should have created a backup for the items that were removed.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles

I tried 'Restore' recently but got a message saying that the various points could not be restored. However, EasyClean does have an Undo option so would that be the way to go, especially since I've only cleaned the registry once? Thank you for your assistance. By the way, this is EasyClean:

    Lugwalker,

    I can't hear my mouse-over sound too.
I have Norton Systemworks. It has taken over that particular sound file with NIMover.wav.
I played that file with WMP and I still can't hear it.
Maybe if I change to another file I can hear it.

That's interesting, Lee, because I use Norton System Works too. Tell me, how did you work out that System Works had taken over that file? If you have any success in solving the problem please let us know. Thank you.

    Lugwalker,

I went to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tab. I then look for Mouse Click & Mouse Over and they both have Norton Integrator: Mouse Click & Norton Integrator: Mouse Over.

I assumed here that Norton took over.

Just found out that my mouse click sound can only be heard in Norton System Works. No sound outside of it, not even when I close the program.

Same here, Lee. Mouse over/click/leave have been monopolized by Symantec Integrator. I wonder how we might break that monopoly?

    Lugwalker,

I just found out that the clicking sound works only in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer. Settings can be changed in Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel. OR right click on speaker icon in systray and click Adjust Audio Properties.

Select Sounds tab. In the scrolling window, scroll down to Windows Explorer. Then look for and select Start Navigation. Here you can choose the sound you want. Please note that the default sound is very soft.
