I seem to have lost my sound! the speaker was accidently left unplugged but all at once and for seemingly no reason, the volume icon was gone and when I click on "volume control ", nothing happens. I have tried everything and can't imagine what to do. Please, can anyone help? i'm at my wit's end!:(

    Hi phylena
Welcome to the boards. First, you have plugged the speaker back in? Have you gone into device manager and looked for any suspicious exclamation marks?
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup Tab > Double Click on 'Multimedia', scroll down to and tick 'volume control' and Ok?

Yes, think I've tried everything!Volume controls features were working fine, except no sound on Monday. by Tues. plugged the speaker in and realized there was no sound icon, ergo! no sound. when I go to Start, Settings>control panel, then Multimedia and Show volume control on the taskbar, it's already checked, but is not lit up, just gray. Have tried everything and still no sound.
Would it be my sound card? Or is not sound a component of Windows?
    thanks for your help!

Since we don't know which operating system is in use, let's try the Hardware Forum.

    Phylena,
Have you removed the sound card in your device manager? If not, try it and reboot. Windows 98 should detect the card and re-install the driver. If not see if you can find the disk that came with the sound card. Good Luck!

Thanks NJTech 30! Have the sound icon back, still no sound but think it's probably the speaker. Will have it checked out.
    Thanks again

Couple of things to check - go to your device manager and under the Multimedia tab, check to make sure that your soundcard is listed as the preferred device. If thats OK, check your audio plug in the back of your computer and make sure your speakers are plugged into audio out if you have analog speakers and soundcard or the 5.1(digital) output if you have digital soundcard and speakers.

    ;)
