I am trying to help a friend remotely who can't get sound trying to view any video on line.

She can play music and mov. files located on her computer and get sound, but not on the internet. Some of them are You Tube videos and some of them are not.

Her speakers are internal computer speakers. She's running Windows 7 I.E.9
I can't tell you much else about her system. She is a beginnner and it's very difficult to get information about her system from her.

Where should I get her to check settings?

Hi Alicia, I did a Google and found this:

"Open IE8 then click on Tools -> Internet Options then click Advanced Tab after this first click on "Restore Advanced Settings" button then click on "Reset" button then restart your computer. "

    Worth a try. Neil.

"Open IE9 then click on Tools -> Internet Options then click Advanced Tab -> Play SOUNDS in web pages would be something to look at.

I would also tell her to update IE. She is running behind. It has been up to 10 for quite a while now.

I'LL see if she has firefox installed. If not I can have her install it to test, but I think I'll try the reset I.E. first.

When you reset do you lose add ons?

I did have her check, play sounds in web pages is checked off.

I haven't updated to I.E. 10 either. I understood there were issues with it on some systems.

Then have her check it on and see if that solves the problem.

Just a few people may have had issues, but that has been months ago.

I didn't update my I.E. to 10 because I had read the Windows Secret newsletter and it had advised to hold off for now. Perhaps I should do so now.

If I.E. is reset is it just a matter of enabling them in manage add ons?

Can a system restore be done to get these settings back if a reset does not resolve the issue anyway?

    Yes
I doubt it - System Restore monitors System files only.

Don't know if it had been mentioned, but has your friend run IE with no add-ons?

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools

Would suggest doing that and see if the issue remains.

Ok. I'll have her install Firefiox and see if she gets sound with that as a first step.
If she gets sound with Firefox I would assume the problem is I.E and not a system problem. I'll post back in a few days after I get ahold of her to try it.

When I get on the phone with her I access her computer remotely with an email invitation. I can see her screen but I can't do anything with my mouse. Is that the way it should work? The easy connect option is greyed out on her system.

Pete I'll have her try running I.E. with no add ons.

Ok I tried with no add ons in I.E. and there was sound. Then I tested firefox, and there was no sound.

My friend is going to get a tech to come over. I'm not sure where to help her from here and she doesn't want to do a reset of I.E.

Thank you all for your input.

Have them enable add-ons one at a time till they find which one is causing the problem. Easy to do.

Oddly enough the only one that shows as enabled when playing a you tube video is shockwave player.
