I did a search and updated java, shockwave and flash. I checked my Vista mixer and everything seems OK. However I do not have any sound on Firefox. The only other browser I have is IE and I do get sound on that. I had sound a week ago, now I do not, it was very sudden. Please help.

    Hi kingblc,

Not a frequent poster in Firefox but for starters:

    Very basic:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/No+sound+in+Firefox

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Video+or+audio+does+not+play#Other_solutions

    http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-searchindex.php?words=sound&sa=

    Windows Vista volume mixer

    1. Open Firefox and visit a site that should play sound.
    2. Click the volume icon in the Windows task bar.
    3. Click Mixer. The Volume Mixer window will appear.
    4. Make sure the Firefox slider isn't at the bottom or muted.

Simple fix and may not be long term but...
Some have found that a disable and a re-enable for either flash, shockwave or realplayer plugins have restored the sound.

Hate to throw second hand links at you but this is better than nothing.

I have no problems, and I see what you mention, but what does
mean? My settings seem to be pretty general.

    Hi Westside,

I'm not 100% sure since I'm on xp machine and not vista, which is broken at the moment. Did a google on this and didn't find much. The firefox help site didn't help much either for that matter. Admittedly, I got lazy and I didn't spend a whole lot of time on it. I'm sure I could find references and pictures if need be.

    Best guesstimate:
I assume, if I were using Vista, this is either part of the vista's mixer setup with volume control ( I vaguely remember being able to add application controls) or possibly would be something that came with a plugin. Dunno

    ------updated-----
I guess these would be an example:

    Hi kingblc,

I gave you access to tons of ideas via links. Did you click through and read these? Many are from a forum with users, who have suffered through what you are, and have posted the fix that worked for them.

I could have sifted through these and posted them here, one or two at a time, but I thought it would save both of us time if I gave you direct access and left the decisions (on what would apply) to you. Your in the best position to know what plugins, extensions and applications you have, and whether these are updated to the latest versions. That goes for both firefox and it's extensions as well.

Both update checks are available via the menubar. Extensions would be found under tools>add ons>Extensions>find updates button, Firefox update is under help. I noticed Firefox 3.0.7 became available today. I just updated myself.

It may help to know what you've done so far in am effort to fix this.

I am sorry I should have made it clear in my original post that I checked the Vista mixer, plugins, and extensions specifically shockwave, flash, quicktime, and java. I have updated them all and double checked that they are not the issue. This is why I am so confused. I have no idea what it can be.

    Hi kingblc,

Can you go here and tell me if sound works in firefox:

    http://www.members.shaw.ca/grandmafaiths2/boogie.htm

Warning: The above requires and requests quicktime plugin!
For other members reading this, for heavens sake if you don't have any need for Apple quicktime please do not...repeat do not install this just because this site requests it.

Quicktime is a bully and unless you are aware of how to tame and control it, it will try to become default for any number of file associations.

Well darn it...that shot down my theory. I was hoping Quicktime had taken over your sound associations. Hmmm

Another good Forefox link and sublinks (note those blue numbers also lead to pertinent subtopics) :
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Flash_audio_not_working_-_Windows

If one of the ^above to-do's doesn't do it......

I'm just going to start throwing a few random ideas at you. I really have no idea what the problem is now. At this point if, you've followed the links, you've gone through almost all the standard steps. If it were me, I would have started uninstalling the plug ins, extensions and applications, I didn't need long ago (beginning with Quicktime). If that didn't do it, I would have uninstalled Firefox and started clean from the get go. I don't have much to lose that would make me bat an eyelash at this, beyond bookmarks, which I keep meaning to backup but have put off for awhile.

The following are just some things you could try that you may not have thought of. Pick and choose as you see fit.

    Which is your default browser?
    What is your default player?

I noticed you said this happened within the last week or so. What has changed in the last week (just prior to loss of sound in Firefox)?

Have you tried looking in Firefox tools>options>applications>* to see what you have as defaults for anything with sound in it. Perhaps if you changed these by clicking on them and from the dropdown choosing another player (just an idea).

How about starting Firefox in safemode?
Should be an option in startmenu>all programs>mozilla Firefox
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

Have you tried backing up your Firefox profile and creating a new profile?
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

Have you looked in event viewer to check for changes that may have taken place to just prior of sound loss?

Have you tried a system restore point to a time before the problem?

How attached are you to Quicktime? Perhaps if you uninstall it and returned all default media associations to wmp?

Got another windows user account you can log into to check if problem is the same?

    -------------------------------
Since sound works in IE as a compromise you might try adding an IE tab to Firefox. I don't know if this would cause a lag in Firefox but it's worth a shot.

    ---------------------------
Does Vista have msinfo32 or system information via all programs accessories system tools>system information? Xp does and once in a while I find it useful to run it and from the menubar choose view>system history and checkout the software changes. I can even choose or vary the dates I wish to see. If Vista has this it may be worth a look see. Maybe something will ring a bell.
