I have an email address with one isp (Maxnet) and an internet connection through another (Xtra)

these are the settings that work with sending emails through Xtra's outgoing smtp server, and receiving new mail from Maxnet:

    pop3.maxnet.co.nz
    smtp.xtra.co.nz

for all those that have the same problem

Try turning off SSL (Under Advanced E-mail settings), unless your ISP said to turn it on. There's also a chance, you need to look at the MTU size on your router. I have seen people having a lot of trouble trying to send emails & timing out
