I unchecked the boxes to the left of several items in MSCONFIG (System Configuration Utility|Startup tab). I then went into the Registry to delete the listing for these items in MSCONFIG. But, (surprise!), there was no Run- key as there is in Win98 in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version. (There still is a Run key.) How can I delete all those listings in MSCONFIG|StartUp?

    Hi Jim...

    I have a "RUN" in HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion and a "RUN" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion

Edit: Wierd...can seem to get rid of the spaces in between the r and e in CurrentVersion...

Admin: There seems to be a "hard-coded" limit of the numbers of characters this vBulletin software will allow in one continues line without spaces. I’ve always worked around it by putting spaces on both sides of each \

dobhar--Thanks, but it is Run- (Run minus)that I am trying to find. At least, in Win98, that was how to get rid of a listing in MSCONFIG|Startup tab that you had unchecked. Maybe there is another way in WinXP?

I've never tried to get rid of stuff I have unchecked unless I have uninstalled it and want to clean it up. Stuff in msconfig HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I have deleted entries from msconfig in both XP home and Pro. I've been all over the registry and have yet to find Run- even after doing a registry search. This is the path I always navigate to remove entries from msconfig's Start. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Run. Right click on the entry you want remove, click on delete, then click OK. Exit the registry.

In XP, the disabled StartUp items are here:

For items that were in the Start -> Programs -> Startup folder:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder
You'll find a subkey for each disabled item.

For items loaded from the Registry:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

In these cases it's then best to use CODE tags in the post:
    Code:
    <tr><td class= "col1 ">&nbsp;</td><td class= "col2 "><br><a href= "man/manual_SQL_Syntax.html#SELECT" target= "_new ">MySQL Manual</a></td></tr>

Odd... I have the run- key with the programs in it and don't have the the strartupreg subkey.

Edit: I missed the first key in ToniT's post. FWIW, I do have that one. Still have to wonder why I have the run- key and not the other one though.

TonyT--You got the right WinXP key to take the place of Win98's "Run- ". Thanks.
lj50--Next time I want to get rid of something from MSCONFIG StartUp tab I will first go to the key you suggest and do the deleting from there. I suspect that will delete the item, effectively unchecking it, too. Thanks.
