    Guys and girls,

I would like to arrange my programs list in alphabetical order using 'sort by name', however when I right click the program list (start>menu>programs) I have no drop down menu at all - nothing happens!!

I've resorted to deleting the menu order in the registry but would really like the right click function back - any ideas where its gone??

    Mick(UK)

pomak249--Is "start>menu>programs" the only place a right click does not bring up a context menu?
If no more right click menu anywhere
    1) Mouse broken/dirty
    2) You may have spyware, or you may have had it, and by deleting it, have changed a setting.
    3) Did you install some new hard/software just before this happened?

Regardless whether you have the problem with all right click menus, or just "start>menu>programs ", if this started less than five days ago, consider restarting your PC in MSDOS mode. At the prompt, type scanreg /restore|OK|choose a date before the problem started|OK|Wait|Reboot.

P.S. A very hairy article on the subject is
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...ing/extensionhandlers/contextmenuhandlers.asp
Not sure I understand much, but in any event I regret I do not know how to identify the CLSID for the start>menu>programs list.

Right click on the Start button and left click on Properties. Click the Customize button on the Start Menu tab, then go to the Advanced tab. Put a check in the box for "Enable dragging and dropping," click OK. That should restore the right click menu on the start menu.

If the box is already checked, uncheck it, click OK. Then see if the right click menu works (it shouldn't but you never know). If it doens't, go back and recheck the "Enable dragging and dropping" box, click OK. That should remind Windows to recognize that setting.

    That works like a
    charm.

    I am truly amazed
    with this. How would
    anyone know that
    dragging and dropping
    would have anything
    to do with right click
    menu?

    I have been using
    computers since '95
    (Win 3.11) thru xp pro
and I begin to think I
    know a little
    about computers and
    something like this
    comes and puts me
    back to novice.

    Live long and
    prosper......

Don't beat yourself up. I never would have associated "Drag and Drop" with "Enable right click menu," either. I saw the solution posted on a computer help forum somewhere or other. :)

Miz--Fantastic! Now that I know the solution I see that I perhaps should have "Googled" the problem!! :)

Guys, Thanks for the tips - didnt help though.

when I right click 'start' all I get is; OPEN
    EXPLORE
    FIND
    SCAN FOR VIRUSES

    No 'properties' tab or 'customization'.

This problem only happens in the programs menu??? I can sort the start menu by 'name' but there is no right click menu when the programs list opens.

Ooops....sorry, pomak249, for some reason I thought I was in the XP forum when I posted that first reply. What I posted only works on XP.

Now that I'm paying attention and see that this is the Win98 forum, take a look at the registry tweak on this page and see if that applies to your situation.

Do you have Tweaking Toolbox installed? If so, see if it's set to disable right clicking on the Start Menu.

Thanks Miz - I already did that registry tweak to get them back in order. Really miss that right click function (my other PC works fine and thats 98se too??).

Only have tweakUI onboard, couldnt find anything in there!

Its gotta be a missing registry key I reckon - wish I could find it!!
