I recently inherited a Win/XP Pro system from a small business that has an in-house server that connects to the outside. The system (at my home)
cannot seem to get a response from the internet in spite of the icon on the taskbar saying that the LAN is truly connected at 100 Mbps. I see bytes sent and received, but no response when I bring up a browser. The system is connected to the net via
ethernet to a modem via a router. All other household systems are
working correctly. Any suggestions where to start looking?

Control Panel > Networking > rt click Local Area Connection > select Properties > double click TCP/IP Internet Protocol > Obtain IP address automatically & Obtain DNS server address automatically.

Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections Tab > LAN settings button > nothing should be checked on that page.

Your suggestion fixed the problem. The "Obtain DNS server address" was checked for a specific IP address. Thanks for your professional guidance!!
