I recently purchased a new computer with Win 7. I have access to the Administrator account and also to my own account 'Tom' which is also an Administrator account.

However, when I go to Documents>My Music in my 'Tom' account and try to access it I get a 'You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click 'continue' to permanently get access to this folder''. When I do so I get the message 'You have been denied permission to access this folder. To gain access you'll need to use the security tab'. When I do that I see a list of Groups or User names.

The only one which has all permissions ticked is 'Everyone'. The other users (Administrators, Tom, etc.) have greyed-out ticks. 'Everyone' doesn't have 100% permission for everything, so I'm wondering how I can get 'Tom', for example, to get full permission to open the Music folder. I can't un-grey the ticks in the other usergroups. As I've said, 'Tom' is an administrator so I'm puzzled as to why I can't access every thing.

It's not a major problem for me because I've just created another Music folder in my Libraries. There is nothing in the locked Music folder.

    Thanks for your help.

In Windows 7 the "C:\Documents and Settings" folder is what's called a Junction, it is not a real folder. This folder was used in previous versions of Windows (XP) to hold all of the users files. This location was changed in Windows 7 to C:\Users.

A Junction is used to redirect a program to a different location for backward compatibility purposes. When a program that was developed for Windows XP is installed in Windows 7, it may be hard coded to look for the "Documents and Settings" folder. So, when it tries to access the "Documents and Settings" Junction, it is immediately redirected to Windows 7's "Users" folder instead.

This backward compatibility is the only reason that the "Documents and Settings" Junction is present on a Windows 7 system. There are many other Junction points in Windows 7 and these can be recognized by the Shortcut Arrow or Padlock overlay on the Junction icon.

All of these Junctions have the permissions set to "Everyone = Access Denied ". This is done to protect them from accidental deletion or permission changes. You should not change any of these properties, because doing so can cause some programs to quit working or prevent some programs from installing.

Thanks, Spyware. So I should just leave things as they are?

Hi Lugwalker. Yes you should not need to take ownership of those folders since your user account should already be set up to let you access your personal folders such as documents, pictures, and music files.

If you want to access your personal files then you can access those folders through the Windows 7 Libraries or through the Start Menu.
