A somewhat unique problem. My machine cannot use a browser to go online, nor use OE, or any other prog. that uses named addresses such as ftp program. I have a DSL line.
Today, i installed a dial-up and it will also not connect to any named addresses. I can ping and tracert any ip address in a DOS window using the DSL line or the dial-up. I cannot ping using a name (eq. yahoo.com). I installed W2k SP# last week.
I had McAfee firewall which started acting strange, so I uninstalled it completely. I wiped out any mention of it from the registry today.
All services seem to be working. I tried copyonh a fresh svchost.exe from another machine, but it did nothing.
At this point, I am looking at a reinstall of w2k and am not looking forward to it.
One more thing. The machine has 2 net cards, 1 for DSL 1 for 3 machine lan. the lan inworking just fine. And i did try switching cards betwen the lan and DSL, but to no avail.
Any help, suggestions or sympathy is appreciated!

Have you setup your TCP/IP properties-- Subnet, default gateway, dns servers? Your DSL provider should give you these along with your IP address

    Hey all! Good News.

I finally figured out the problem. When I installed SP3, it corrupted McAfee firewall which then blocked all incoming data. I had to reinstall the firewall, then uninstall it. Then everything worked once again. Thank you for all help

Glad you got it figured out.

There are enough "strange issues" that have McAfee as part of the problem to make one strongly consider using another product.

I was a happy McAfee user years ago but not recently (past 3-4 years).
