How can I get winXPpro device manager to provide a monitor device? Hardware wizard is no help at all, never provides a "monitor" choice. Did a recent 1st-time install booting from CD onto a partitioned 40G. Now in XP partition, can only boot into safe mode, screen goes blank in normal XP mode. Loaded the latest display adapter driver downloaded from ATI, the Radeon 7000/VE driver; adapter is a VE. Had a similar problem in w98se with this VE & monitor, but worked it out. Should I again boot from the CD or use the "add hardware" wizard from the CD (if there is one)? Thanks.

Still sounds like a driver problem.

Is this the driver you recently installed?

    http://mirror.ati.com/support/produ...indows+XP&cboProducts=RADEON+7000&cmdNext=GO!

I have that card on this computer, and it works well. The control panel for that card needs to be downloaded and installed, too (same page).

In the ATI control panel (Settings, Advanced in Display properties), there is a place to choose what monitor you are using.

PS. As a temporary fix, until you get this sorted, try opening Device Manager, right-clicking the Radeon and choosing "Update" (with the XP CD in the bay). There is a generic driver for that card on the CD.

    need further (monitor) info

Thanks for reply, Abraxas, however, the link you sent had the same .exe file which I downloaded. When I unstuffed it, and used the "update driver" for the ATI card, the driver name in dev. mgr. changed from Radeon VE to Radeon 7000/VE, so i assume the driver update happened. But nothing else changed, still won't boot to normal winXP. And when I tried to execute the "setup" which came with the VE download (which setup, I presume, has the control panel you speak of), I got the message: "severe. .inf error, video driver not found." I have a question in to ATI on this.
I still would like to learn how to have device manager find the monitor, independent of the display adapter.
And I would like to install a non-VE display adapter (truly generic) to start with, so that I can then update directly from the updated VE driver file I downloaded, skipping the older VE from the win XP. And maybe this move will allow me to install a monitor. Advice? Thanks.

That seems strange. When I clicked on the downloaded file, it opened, dumped its contents, and the installation began automatically with a popup ATI logo and the usual installation stuff. There was no need to go to "update driver ".

The control panel for that driver is an entirely different download, on the same page, of something over 7 megs.

If I remember right, the original Microsoft-supplied driver that comes on the XP CD is also on that page (it does not support OpenGL). If you want to start fresh, you might go to Add/Remove in the Control Panel and uninstall the ATI driver. Then you can install the Microsoft one. At least that will get you back to square one so you can decide what to do from there.

It may actually be necessary for you to get the card driver matter settled before you start dealing with the monitor. The card will need to be working properly in order for the monitor to be detected, of course.

If you don't have umpteen options in your Display Properties, Settings, Advanced, then you don't have the ATI Control Panel. Choosing the monitor there will at least assure you that the card has the right one.

Note: As you probably know, this driver opens to a folder, ATI, in the root directory. You may want to delete that folder so any new installation of a driver truly starts fresh.

Thanks again, Abraxas. I did download the CP package. I used gozilla to download the driver package, & there were several error messages during download, so I will redownload that just to cover things. I'll follow your steps too & see if & what ATI sez...
This is an ASUS P4B533 mobo with an i845e chipset, & as said, I had trouble also in w98se, until I updated the BIOS. No using that for a reason now, so I'm puzzled. It's only been a few mos. but I'll recheck Intel for updates too.
