Win 2k-SP3. New MB in my home-built. There is no drive letter
assigned to my HP CD-writer+ 9700k drive. BIOS recognizes the
drive and if I do a My Computer/Ctl. panel/System/Hdwre./+DVD-CD-ROMS it shows the CD-RW and the properties says "working
properly ". Storage drives are a partitioned IBM HD, floppy,
CD-ROM, Zip 250 internal and the HP CD-RW. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Are you able to assign it a drive letter in Disk Management?

The CD-RW does not show up in the "disk management "
process. Only the partitioned HD , the CD-ROM and the int. Zip
drive. I have now tried using the new style flat cable and putting the Zip on another IDE-3 port. The HD is on an IDE-1
by itself as is the Zip. The two CD-ROM and RW drives are
    chained off IDE-2. Should I try un-installing/re-installing the CD-RW?

I assume the jumpers are set correctly. You might try slaving the cd or cdrw to the HD.
