    Hi all,

I do not know what has happened but now when I place a DVD or something into my DVD drive it does not show the name of the DVD in "My Computer" Also it use to autoplay but this does not appear to happen now either. This also happens with my CD Drive.

I am running XP Pro. Samsung DVD Combo and a LG 52x CDROM.

Hope someone can help quickly. :)

does bios see the drives? if so, does devicemanger see them and are they working here?

if bios doesn't see them, the pc never will. use 'autodected' to fix. check u'r cable/jumper settings as well.

if bios does see them and devman lists them as errored, remove them from devman and reboot.

if bios does see them and devman doesn't, i'd remove the IDE controller in devman that they are attached to and reboot. if this doesn't fix them, then isolate to ONE device and test. then add the other if successfull.

for followup Qs if needed - please list machine make/model, drive make/model and cable setup/jumper positions

I think one of us is misunderstanding the problem here so I'm going to ask this right away. Can you see the drive in My Computer? My understanding is that the drive shows up in My Computer OK but when you put a CD in the drive the drive icon doesn't change as it should and also the autorun feature doesn't work. If this is the case, does the drive function normally other than that? Can you browse the CD in My Computer.

I think what skeet's thinking is that you can't see the drive at all in My Computer. To avoid some confusion here, which way is it?

    Hi all,

Thanks for your replys. Zander is spot on here - nothing is out of the ordinary I can still browse the cd but it dosen't show the name of the disc it just says "DVD/CD Drive" and dosen't autorun.

    Hope this helps.

Have you run the Autoplay Repair Wizard as suggested by Zander?

Try uninstalling the drives through Device Manager and rebooting to let Windows find them again.

i forgot to duck the idiot stick it seems ;) ... to OP - i'd still take a crack at removing the drive altogether and rebooting or maybe changing it's drive letter designation thru diskmanager.

can't help ya w/ the WGA stuff

It seems a little weird because a few weeks ago it seemed to work find so by changing the drive letter I can't see how it could fix it. How about the name situation? The drive dosen't show the disc name still.

First, click>start>run and type services.msc and click ok. In the window that opens scroll to the shell hardware detection service and make sure it's started and set to automatic. If it's not, double click on it and in the window that opens you'll find a place where you can set it to automatic. Then, either start the service manually or reboot the computer for it to take effect.

If that's ok go the page I've linked to below and try downloading and running the reg file for enabling autoplay. Line 10, left side. Enable CD AutoPlay for Pro

All of this was blatantly ripped off from another one of Kelly's pages. :D You can have a look at it here. Scroll to the autoplay section.

YAH :D It works like a dream now :) Thanks a lot for this it fixed the autorun and the disc name appears on both drives now. Thanks heaps.

This is more of a different question but in the list that pops up it asks what I want to play the dvd with (i like to use Nero ShowTime which is not an option in the list - Windows Media Player shows up though. Does anyone know how to get Nero Showtime to appear there?

Download Tweak UI if you don't already have it and, in the left hand pane ....

My Computer > Autoplay > Handlers > Create

    Cheers Pete,

If you set it and then uninstall Tweak UI then does it loose that setting?

I think not - Tweak UI is a graphical interface for modifying the Registry (safely :) )
