I have a Sony RX650 - os is Windows XP Home. My problem is the modem. I have a DSL connection to the internet and a Lucent Win Modem for faxing. Windows detects the modem and says that it is working correctly, and I have downloaded the latest driver. However, when I try to send a fax, it will not go through because there is no dial tone. I can hear a faint click and then nothing. I have checked the phone line by plugging a regular phone into it, and I do get a dial tone that way. Have also checked the connection to the computer and it seems to be secure. The fax service is installed correctly. Is there any help for this? Do I need a new modem?

This is a sign of a possible fried modem. Unfortunately if everything is installed correctly and all appears normal the only sure way to test it is swap known good for suspected bad. Swappig it out with one you know works is really the only way to elminate the modem.

Most people don't realize that modems are extremely sensitive to electrical surges. Even if the machine itself is plugged into a surge protector you can still fry the modem through the phone line. If you have a good quality surge protector you should be able to run your phone line through it with no problems. My DSL connection goes through a surge protector with no drop in performance whatsoever.

Thanks for your reply. I do have my phone line going through my surge protector, but apparently it didn't help. I will try swapping the modem out for a new one as soon as I can get one.
