No desktop icons or explorer

Had a win32 trojan downloader, can't remember the exact name and I lost the paper I had written it down on. In any event ZoneAlarm seems to have removed it but now I don't have any desktop icons, start/programs menu or explorer. I can run programs by browsing thru Task Manager. If I run explorer, the desktop and tray icons appear for about 30 seconds and then disappear again.

Maybe explorer.exe is missing

Recently my computer developed a couple of the same major symptoms in this post. The primary symptoms were: Taskbar and Desktop icons disappeared suddenly while the system was being used and would not return. For the record, the OS is XP Pro, SP2 and the symptoms appeared at the very end of installing Microsoft update KB946627. I tried some potential fixes known to me, then some from this BBS, and then some from other sources. Eventually I found the PROGLEM: explorer.exe was gone (i.e., not in C:\Windows\). My FIX: Copied explorer.exe from another computer with the same OS to where it belongs on the damaged computer.

More info. I was running an up-to-date Zone Alarm Security Suite.

More info. During the first system restart after I inserted explorer.exe the system initiated a System Restore (SR) using the most recent System Restore Point (SRP); it didn't ask permission or offer any options. When it finished, a window appeared with info: 1) it was not able to use that SRP, 2) it had not made any changes to the system, and 3) it suggested I try another SRP. I tried three more SRPs (in reverse chronological order) with the same (non)results. When I finally canceled out of SR (instead of selecting another SRP), the system came up normally. Been fine every since.

More info. After the system was fixed I used to it to compare the newly inserted explorer.exe with explorer.exe in the most recent full backup of the system. The former is 300 bytes larger than the latter and it is a later version, 6.00.2900.3156 (xpsp_sp2_gdr.070613-1234) vs. 6.00.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158). I decided to leave things as they are, but...

More info. On the Web, I found no mention of any problems with the Microsoft update (KB946627) I was installing when the problem occurred. So I still don't know what deleted explorer.exe...
