This is the error that is seen on the desktop that my children share. I have a laptop that connects via Lynksys wireless-G. I also have a verizon wireless air card which is allowing me access now. Our ISP is Comcast Cable.
My laptop indicates it is connected to the internet with excellent strength however cannot display any web pages (without the use of the air card).
When I first started trouble shooting ipconfig/renew did not work, the IP address was 169.254.xxx. Which is not correct it should be 192.168.xxx, I did manually correct that. I have unplugged and plugged and rebooted everything several times. Any ideas what else to try?? I am desparate, everyone needs to do homework and they all want my laptop!!!

First of all - the signal strength meter tells you the strength of the signal generated by the nearest wireless network point. Hopefully this should be your router, but it may not be (it could be your neighbours router for example!). It certainly does not tell you the strength or success of your connection to the internet.

It is probably worth stepping back and clarifying a few points. Can you confirm the following:
    • You have a laptop and a desktop
    • You have two external (that is not built into the laptop) wireless cards. One a Lynksys wireless-G, and the other a verizon wireless air card.
    • When you connect with the verizon card, you can connect to the internet, but if you use the Linksys card you cannot.
    • Are you also trying to connect via a cable connection between your router and the laptop?
    • Which of the computers is the problem on: the desktop, the laptop or both?
Can you please give us the make and model of: you laptop, desktop, wireless cards, and router.
